  1. Safety Alert No. 04 Jan 99 Committed to Safety Loose Objects in Vehicle Cabins Background A few months ago, a vehicle cab rolled over and resulted in one fatality. In this accident, a fire extinguisher became loose during the roll over and blood was found on the extinguisher. • Causes of the Accident • A loose object (extinguisher) in the vehicle cab may have been a contributing factor in this fatal roll over accident. • Learning Points and Actions to Prevent Recurrence • - In the event of an accident, for example: • A collision • A rollover • any loose object in the vehicle cab may hit the people in the cabin and cause additional injuries. • - Drivers should keep the vehicle cabin free from all loose objects. • Any loose object in the cabin is a threat to the safety of the driver and the passengers. • Loose objects may include: • Tool boxes • Jacks • Spare parts • Tools • Inadequately secured fire extinguisher • Personal belongings • All drivers must ensure that loose objects are not in the passenger cabin. Instead they should be carried: • Pick-ups - in the goods area at the back • Station Wagons - behind the luggage screen • Goods vehicle - in the goods area at the back • Buses - in boot or in the designated luggage container • - Remember: LOOSE ITEMS MUST NOT BE CARRIED IN THE VEHICLE CAB
