  3. Sunbeds give off UVA and UVB rays like the sun Which objects give off UV light? Can UV be harmful? How are sunbeds linked to skin cancer? SS1 science of uv light Ultraviolet (UV) light is electromagnetic radiation. You may get a tan when your skin absorbs UV radiation. Too much gives you sunburn. UV damages your DNA. This can build up over many years and lead to skin cancer. UV also has health benefits. It triggers your body to make vitamin D. The sun’s rays contain 3 types of UV: • UVA makes up most of sunlight and makes skin age. It can also cause skin cancer. • UVB is what makes your skin burn and is the main cause of skin cancer. • UVC is mostly filtered out by the Earth’s atmosphere. The ozone layer blocks 97-99% of UV radiation from the sun from reaching the Earth’s surface.

  4. SS2 Programme outline Researcher: ............................................... Claim: Sunbeds increase your risk of getting skin cancer. Introduction: Abigail will explain the science of UV light. Check evidence: She will describe the evidence which supports our claim, and the evidence that doesn’t. 4 3 2 1 supports / opposes / neutral supports / opposes / neutral supports / opposes / neutral supports / opposes / neutral Summarise: She will explain how well the evidence supports our claim. Next steps: Abigail will suggest further tests. Or if the claim is wrong, she will suggest one that fits better.

  5. SS3 Reasoner LIFELINE More than 1 piece of evidence 1 piece of evidence Does each piece of evidence support the claim*? No Is there any evidence to support the claim*? No CHECK EVIDENCE Yes Yes A LOT of support A LITTLE support NO support Explain HOW WELL the evidence supports the claim* overall. SUMMARISE Explain why the evidence opposes the claim* or is irrelevant. Suggest a test to make the claim stronger. Describe the results you expect if the claim* is correct. Say the claim* could be wrong. Suggest a claim that fits the evidence better. NEXT STEPS * or hypothesis Suggest a different claim* that fits the evidence better.

  6. SS4 Evidence 1 Evidence 3 Increase in natural UV radiation 1980-1997 Increase in yearly UV dose 11-13% 8-10% 5-7% 0-4% Evidence 4 Evidence 2 * Irradiance is a measurement of how strong radiation is. trips abroad from the UK (thousands) year
