Seaholm High School “Closing Out” Junior Year • Finish strong for trimester 3 • Schedule a meeting with their counselor • Request letters of recommendations • Finalize list of extra curricular activities, awards and community service (grades 9-11) • Visit colleges • Register for upcoming ACT and/or SAT Tests, if applicable http://www.actstudent.orghttp://www.actstudent.org or http://sat.collegeboard.org/
Seaholm High School Letters of Recommendation • Ask teachers from core academic areas that know you well and can write a positive letter • Most letters will be submitted to colleges online • Follow up with teacher in the Fall, remind them of deadlines • Give plenty of notice; write a thank you note • Counselor letter of rec – provide a resume of activities and senior profile
Seaholm High School Your Transcript and Parchment • Go to www.parchment.com and set up an account • Self report courses/grades, extra curriculars, awards etc.. • Identify Seaholm as your high school • Identify CORRECT graduation year - 2017 • Select colleges to which you are applying • Prospective D1 or D2 athletes must set up an account with NCAA Clearinghouse (more info at Senior Night Fall 2016)
Seaholm High School College Applications • 2016-17 applications available late July – mid August • Read application instructions • Applications vary greatly from college to college • Not all colleges require an essay or letters of recommendation (MSU, Grand Valley, CMU)
Seaholm High School New In Higher Education • Redesigned SAT • PPY – Prior Prior Year – Financial Aid opens October 1st 2016 • Common App – rollover accounts April 1st • Coalition App – new; select schools • Wheel is spinning faster and faster; increased apps, decreased admission rates; less predictable
Seaholm High School What is the Common Application? • One application used by all member institutions • Consortium of colleges & universities (Hope, Miami of Ohio, Northwestern, IU) • Some institutions have additional supplements (with essays) • Apply online at www.commonapp.org • Opens for next app cycle August 1st
Seaholm High School Essay • Be authentic; add YOUR voice • Give your app life beyond the numbers • Answer the essay prompt • Beware of repeating information already given in the app • Writing essays that are so general and vague that anyone could have written them
Seaholm High School Beginning of Senior Year • Finalize college list and share with your counselor • Create a Parchment account and request transcripts • Complete Senior Profile and email to counselor along with resume • Attend the Senior/Parent Night in September
Seaholm High School Camp College 2016 • Offered this summer through Community Ed • Program guiding students through app process including starting app, getting docs in que, research, writing essay • July 18-21 and July 25-28 (2 sessions; 10:30-noon; 12:30 – 2) • Lead by Judi Stahl with invited guest speakers
