Objectives • Explain the difference between drug misuse and drug abuse. • Identify the risks of drug abuse • Identify the most commonly used club drugs. • List the physical effects of anabolic steroids.
Lesson 1 & 2 • Drug • Is a substance other than food that changes the structure or function of the body or mind. • This CAN include prescription medicines and over-the-counter (OTC) medication. • Rx would be Vicodin, Percocet, Oxycontin, Darvocet, Prozac, etc… • OTC would be aspirin, ibuprofen, Tylenol, Flu/Cold meds.
Misuse and abuse • Misuse- Is taking or using medicine in a way that is not intended. • Examples….? • Common side effects are: • Stomach upset • Drowsiness • Sleeplessness • headache • Abuse is intentionally using drugs in a way that is unhealthy or illegal. • Examples…?
Marijuana • Is dried leaves and flowers of the hemp plant, called Cannabis Sativa. • Main active chemical is THC, is alters the way the brain processes sensory information. • It is a VERY powerful substance that signals the release of dopamine, similar to adrenaline. • Short term effects • Reduces reaction time and coordination and impairs judgment • Memory and learning problems • Long term effects • Lung disease, including cancer • Depression, anxiety, and personality disorders
Club drug- ecstasy • Originally known as MDMA and in 1953 it was used by the US Army in psychological warfare tests. • 1970’s it began to be used as a party drug, used in dance clubs. • Ecstasy can contain a mixture of substances such as LSD, cocaine, heroin, & methamphetamines.
Ecstasy Effects • Short Term- Impaired judgment, confusion, paranoia, blurred vision, nausea • Can also cause Amnesia • Partial or total loss of memory. • Long Term- Degenerated nerve endings, depression, psychosis, kidney failure, convulsions, DEATH!
Date Rape drugs • Rohypnol, commonly called “roofie” • Suppresses the nervous system. • Has no odor, color, or taste. • When taken unknowingly, a person becomes unaware of what is happening and is unable to resist an attack or unwanted sexual advances.
Others • GHB • Suppresses nervous system and usually comes in liquid form • Ketamine (aka Special K) • Used as anesthetic and is a powder/pill form. • Usually sprinkled over marijuana and can cause hallucinations, memory loss, and severe breathing problems. • Can kill you
Steroids • Synthetic substances related to the male sex hormones. • Used mainly by athletes who want to enhance their athletic performance. Use of steroids can cause irreversible damage. • Major Side Effects include: Liver tumors, cancer, jaundice, high BP, kidney tumors, acne.
Steroids con’t… • In males, testicles may shrink and men might develop breasts • Females may grow facial hair, menstrual cycle changes OR stop completely, and deepened voice. • STATS • In 1993 one in every 45 high school students used anabolic steroids • In 2010 one in every 16 high school students used anabolic steroids
