Early Life of Clyde Hoey • Born in Shelby, NC on December 11, 1877 • Attended public school • Left school at age 12 to be a printer’s apprentice • Became the owner, editor, and publisher of the Cleveland Star • Went to UNC Chapel Hill law school • Admitted to the bar in 1899
Governmental Career • Lawyer in Shelby • Member of State House of Commons; 1898-1902 • State Senate member; 1902-1904 • Assistant U.S. Attorney for the Western district of North Carolina; 1913-1919 • Elected on December 16, 1919, as a Democrat to the Sixty-sixth Congress to fill the vacancy caused by the resignation of Edwin Y. Webb and served to March 3, 1921
Governmental Career Cont. • Governor of North Carolina 1937-1941 • elected as a Democrat to the United States Senate in 1944 • reelected in 1950 and served from January 3, 1945, until his death in his Senate office in Washington, D.C., May 12, 1954
What Clyde Accomplished as Governor • The state provided free textbooks for elementary schools • Increased teacher salaries • Expanded highway systems • Reformed child labor laws • Instituted parole reforms
Accomplishments Cont. • Offered the first graduate courses at black colleges • Initiated the first advertising programs to attract tourists • The State Bureau of Investigation created • State Board of Alcoholic Beverage Control created
Clyde Roark Hoey • Second NC governor to serve as governor and in both houses of the Legislature and both houses of congress • Accomplished a lot in his career • Well liked governor • Died in his Senate office in Washington, D.C. on May 12, 1954 • Buried in Sunset Cemetery in Shelby, NC
