Introduction • Started and continuously use directional drilling since 1999 • 1999 to 2004 • Variety of mud motors from different companies • 2004 to present • DeviDrill from Devico • Completed more than 3 800 metres of actual directional drilling representing 102 directional holes as of December 2006

DeviDrill • How it works (simplified version) • Directional core barrel attached to drill string • Rotate the core barrel in the direction you want to go • Correct for azimuth, dip or both • Inflate an onboard packer to hold the core barrel in place for the change in hole path • Drill as normal within the specifications of the DeviDrill • Core is obtained using a wire-line system

DeviDrill • Steering the core barrel • Mule shoe system used to determine the “Roll” of the core barrel. “Roll” explained as the deflection of the core barrel (0-360o) in relation to the azimuth of the hole • Tests (azimuth and dip) ahead of the bit can be performed at anytime while the DeviDrill is still in the hole using a survey instrument. • Devico provides all survey tools and adaptable third party tools can be used Mule shoe system

  34. Operations at Shea Creek • Why do we use DeviDrill? • Have to look at our mud motor operations in the past • AREVA Resources with the help of Boart Longyear pioneered directional drilling in the Athabasca Basin.

  35. Mixing Tanks Operations at Shea Creek • Why do we use DeviDrill? • Less equipment and water on site • No extra pumps, mixing tanks and rods (normally reduce one rod size smaller when using a mud motor) • The DeviDrill does not require extra equipment or water Rods Pump

Reaming directional cuts increases the cost per metre. Successful prototypes where introduced at our operations. • Reaming shell is standard equipment with DeviDrill.

  38. Operations at Shea Creek • Why do we use DeviDrill? • Survey ahead of the bit. To know where you are in a directional cut is crucial to positioning a hole towards a target. • Any mud motor system relies on surveys (real time, multi or single shot) 9 to 12 metres behind the bit within a non-magnetic portion of the drill string. An estimate has to be made to determine the hole orientation at the bit or the motor has to be pull out of the hole and replaced by the core barrel to perform a survey. • Devico provides a miniature survey tool (single or multi-shot) that can through the DeviDrill bit.

(the main reason) • Cost savings • 2006 drilling compaign, 19 directional cuts with the DeviDrill from three pilot holes • Average savings of 62% using the DeviDrill instead of re-starts from surface. • Maximum savings per cut was 87% • Minimum savings per cut was 50% • Included in DeviDrill costs are hourly rate for drilling, rental of DeviDrill and survey equipment and all chargeable equipment including wedges, bits, drilling muds and equipment repair.

Operations at Shea Creek • How we use it? • Possibly a unique situation at Shea Creek • A trained designates perform all the pre-planning; decide when to put or pull the DeviDrill from the drill hole and determine the direction to steer the core barrel. • The drill contractor (Boart Longyear) performs all down hole operations with the DeviDrill, schedule maintenance and repairs.

Operations at Shea Creek • How we use it? • Targets are planned between 650 metres and 850 metres below surface. • Distance or step-outs away from the pilot hole (vertical) varies between 20 metres and 100 metres. • A wedge is placed in the hole to start the cut and directional drilling occurs thereafter. • Rate of drilling is similar to normal coring. Between 500-600 metre depth, 9 to 12 metres in a 12 hour shift. Time for setting the core barrel and taking tests consume time. • Test taken every 3 metres, 6 metres maximum

Operations at Shea Creek • How we use it? • Maximum rates of curvature performed (not recommended) • 1o per metre when drilling with hole direction (flattening or steeping a hole) • 10o per metre when drilling perpendicular to hole direction (correcting for azimuth) • Dogleg 12 degree/ 30 meter ) • Normal rate of curvature performed at Shea Creek • 1o per 3 metres when drilling with hole direction • 10o per 3 metres when drilling perpendicular to hole direction • Dogleg 9 degree/ 30 meter

Depth is not the only factor to consider. • Directional drilling has a learning curve • Experience is required, where do you get it? • Devico or “Licensed Users” of Devico • Reputable drilling contactors with experience • Geotechnical properties • good ground conditions are required • fabric orientations have to be considered • Be committed and ready • Directional drilling requires input from all parties involved, “The clock is ticking when you start and money is being spent”. • Maybe challenge a myth or two • RODS DO BEND!
