JELL-NOOOOOOO! Laboratory Investigation
1. Title of experiment: • “The Affects of Pineapple Juice on Jell-O”
2. Purpose of the experiment: • The purpose of the lab is to understand why the Jell-O did not set.
3. Hypothesis (Write as an “If-then” statement): • If the enzyme bromelainis added to Jell-O, then the Jell-O won’t set.
4. Prediction: • Because fresh pineapple has the enzyme bromelain, it will cause the Jell-O to not set.
5. Materials List: • Jell-O • Fresh pineapple • Canned pineapple • Etc.
7. Control group: • The control group is the Jell-O with nothing added to it.
8. Independent variable: • The independent variable is the type of pineapple used (fresh vs. canned).
9. Dependent variable: • The dependent variable is whether or not the Jell-O sets.
10. Procedure: • Make Jell-O according to package instructions. • Add fresh pineapple to one sample. • Add canned pineapple to the other sample. • Refrigerate.
11. Conclusion: • Because the fresh pineapple has the enzyme bromelain, it does not allow the Jell-O to set. Because the canned pineapple does NOT contain the enzyme (due to it being destroyed by the heat of the canning process), the Jell-O will set.
