  2. How the Body lives • "Therefore, having laid aside falsehood, each one of you speak the truth with his neighbor, for we are members of one another. Be angry and do not sin; do not let the sun go down on the cause of your anger. Do not give the devil an opportunity. The one who steals must steal no longer; rather he must labor, doing good with his own hands, so that he may have something to share with the one who has need. You must let no unwholesome word come out of your mouth, but only what is beneficial for the building up of the one in need, that it may give grace to those who hear. And do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, by whom you were sealed for the day of redemption. You must put away every kind of bitterness, anger, wrath, quarreling, and evil, slanderous talk. Instead, be kind to one another, compassionate, forgiving one another, just as God in Christ also forgave you.

  3. How the Body lives • Therefore, be imitators of God as dearly loved children and live in love, just as Christ also loved us and gave himself for us, a sacrificial and fragrant offering to God. But among you there must not be either sexual immorality, impurity of any kind, or greed, as these are not fitting for the saints. Neither should there be vulgar speech, foolish talk, or coarse jesting—all of which are out of character—but rather thanksgiving. For you can be confident of this one thing: that no person who is immoral, impure, or greedy (such a person is an idolater) has any inheritance in the kingdom of Christ and God. Let nobody deceive you with empty words, for because of these things God’s wrath comes on the sons of disobedience.

"Therefore, having laid aside falsehood, each one of you speak the truth with his neighbor, for we are members of one another.“ (Ephesians 4:25, NET) • It will be difficult today to speak the truth • This is a very difficult passage, and by God’s grace I will not distort the Word • We should be truthful because we are of the same Body, the body will not grow if fed bad food (lies) • The only reliable evidence of a person’s being saved is not a past experience of receiving Christ but a present life that reflects Christ. “The one who says, ‘I have come to know Him’ and does not keep His commandments, is a liar, and the truth is not in him” (1 John 2:4). "Be angry and do not sin; do not let the sun go down on the cause of your anger.” (NET 4:26) • Paul gives a direct quotation from the LXX on Psalm 4:4, in the Hebrew allows for the above translation as well as others • Some grammarians think that a conditional imperative may have an imperative in the apodosis” (the ‘then’ part of an ‘if/then’ statement). “However, this is usually assumed for the very passage that is highly debatable, Eph 4:26. The gloss suggested is if you are angry, do not sin (Wallace, 491)” • there are no other undisputed examples of conditional imperatives in the construction imperative + kai, + imperative in the NT • all of the possible conditional imperatives in the construction imperative + kai, + imperative require the trailing imperative to function semantically like a future indicative • all of the conditional imperatives in the NT (both undisputed and potential) retained their imperatival force.

"Be angry and do not sin; do not let the sun go down on the cause of your anger.” (NET 4:26) • The term παροργισμός (parorgismos) is used almost exclusively of the source of anger, not the result. That is, it refers to an external cause or provocation, not an internal reaction. • Cf., e.g., 1 Kings 15:30; 2 Kings 23:26; Neh 9:18; Ps Sol 8:8-9 (a text that bears more than a passing resemblance to Eph 4:26, both probably referring back to a common Jewish source). Wallace • Parorgismos is a rare word in classical Greek

Various translations 4:26 • "Be angry and do not sin; do not let the sun go down on your anger," (Ephesians 4:26, ESV) • “Be ye angry, and sin not: let not the sun go down upon your wrath:" (Ephesians 4:26, KJV) • Perhaps not correct • "If you become angry, do not let your anger lead you into sin, and do not stay angry all day." (Ephesians 4:26, GNT) • “In your anger do not sin”: Do not let the sun go down while you are still angry," (Ephesians 4:26, NIV) • "Be angry, and yet do not sin; do not let the sun go down on your anger, " (Ephesians 4:26, NASB95)

  8. Pythagoras • The expression of the sun going down upon one’s anger comes from a Pythagorean custom • The involved two parties should come together and join right hands and be reconciled

"Do not give the devil an opportunity."(4:27, NET) • This is similar to our discussion on tolerance, we give the devil an opportunity by allowing sin in our midst • Daniel Wallace states this “would thus mean that one should not give a place to the devil by doing nothing about the sin in the midst of the believing community”

  10. "The one who steals must steal no longer; rather he must labor, doing good with his own hands, so that he may have something to share with the one who has need." (4:28, NET) • What follows is how we should live as a body, and those things that occur in a body which are not healthy • In a body were certain cells are out of control and consume the energy and nutrients of the body, the body will be unhealthy. This is cancer, what happens when the cancer spreads to the entire body? • In a human body each cell, each organ, must help nurture the body. • We must not steal from one another, but give.

"You must let no unwholesome word come out of your mouth, but only what is beneficial for the building up of the one in need, that it may give grace to those who hear." 4:29, NET • Unwholesome or σαπρός [sapros] like a saprophytic organism – a mushroom living on decaying refuse and dead things • What will come about if we talk about such things that are useless and worthless? • If a body takes in food that has no nutrition, like chips and coke and and sweets, what will become of the body? Will it be healthy?

"And do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, by whom you were sealed for the day of redemption.“ Net 4:30 • We are sealed by the Holy Spirit (Eph 1:13) • The Holy Spirit is a person, or else He would not be grieved • We grieve the Holy Spirit by tearing down the body, that is stealing and speaking worthless things that does not build up the body but destroys the body • "Do you not know that you are a temple of God and that the Spirit of God dwells in you? If any man destroys the temple of God, God will destroy him, for the temple of God is holy, and that is what you are. " (1 Corinthians 3:16-17, NASB95)

"You must put away every kind of bitterness, anger, wrath, quarreling, and evil, slanderous talk.“4:31 • Other ways the Holy Spirit would be grieved are by these actions • Bitterness produces bitter fruit πικρία [pikria] • anger as in 4:26 ὀργή [orge /or·gay/] • Some state that because of this verse, 4:26 must be taken as a conditional imperative • Our understanding is driven by the grammar, and as these situations arise they must be dealt with quickly, and the sun should not set on our anger • Slander is βλασφημία [blasphemia /blas·fay·me·ah/]

  14. "Instead, be kind to one another, compassionate, forgiving one another, just as God in Christ also forgave you." (Ephesians 4:32, • Our behavior should be Christ like • We should be forgiving • "“For if you forgive others for their transgressions, your heavenly Father will also forgive you. " (Matthew 6:14, NASB95) • "Above all, keep fervent in your love for one another, because love covers a multitude of sins. " (1 Peter 4:8, NASB95) • Because God in Christ has forgiven us all our sins

"Therefore, be imitators of God as dearly loved children and live in love, just as Christ also loved us and gave himself for us, a sacrificial and fragrant offering to God.“ (Ephesians 5:1-2) • We should be imitators of God, as Christ was in the image of God • "And He is the radiance of His glory and the exact representation of His nature, and upholds all things by the word of His power. When He had made purification of sins, He sat down at the right hand of the Majesty on high, " (Hebrews 1:3, NASB95) • "Whoever believes that Jesus is the Christ is born of God, and whoever loves the Father loves the child born of Him. By this we know that we love the children of God, when we love God and observe His commandments. For this is the love of God, that we keep His commandments; and His commandments are not burdensome. " (1 John 5:1-3, NASB95) • “fragrant offering” a sacrifice, as the whole burnt offering and the Old Testament was a soothing aroma to God

"But among you there must not be either sexual immorality, impurity of any kind, or greed, as these are not fitting for the saints.“ (Ephesians 5:3) • There should not be any πορνεία [porneia /por·ni·ah/] immorality. Specifically this means fornication, but as clarified in the words of Christ • "but I say to you that everyone who looks at a woman with lust for her has already committed adultery with her in his heart. " (Matthew 5:28, NASB95) • And greed is like • "“You shall not covet your neighbor’s house; you shall not covet your neighbor’s wife or his male servant or his female servant or his ox or his donkey or anything that belongs to your neighbor.” " (Exodus 20:17, NASB95) • "For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh and the lust of the eyes and the boastful pride of life, is not from the Father, but is from the world. " (1 John 2:16, NASB95)

"Neither should there be vulgar speech, foolish talk, or coarse jesting—all of which are out of character—but rather thanksgiving.” (Ephesians 5:4, The NET) • Foolish talkμωρολογία [morologia /mo·rol·og·ee·ah/] • μωρός is related to the Sanskr. mūras (“dull-witted”) • Neither should we make course jokes, but this is not the character of Christ • In everything we should give thanks • "in everything give thanks; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus. " (1 Thessalonians 5:18, NASB95)

  18. "For you can be confident of this one thing: that no person who is immoral, impure, or greedy (such a person is an idolater) has any inheritance in the kingdom of Christ and God." (Ephesians 5:5 • Those who are immoral and greedy are actually idolaters • And in the Old Testament those who worship false gods were driven out of the land • What happens to those who claim to know God who by their deeds they deny Him? • "They profess to know God, but by their deeds they deny Him, being detestable and disobedient and worthless for any good deed." (Titus 1:16, NASB95)

  19. "Let nobody deceive you with empty words, for because of these things God’s wrath comes on the sons of disobedience.“ (Ephesians 5:6) • κενός [kenos /ken·os/] without content, of no substance • Bill Clinton is an example of someone who’s words had no meaning, he would redefine for his own purposes what the words meant • I hope my words are not without content, that is why I believe study of God’s Word in its original context is so important
