Types of Fashion Haute Couture Prêt-a-Porter • Dressmaking houses in Paris that belong to the ChambreSyndicale of the Federation Francaise de la Couture and meet the criteria to be on its Couture-Creation list. • French for ready-to-wear; literally, “ready to carry”.
Couture (koo-tour) • The French word for dressmaking; applied to fashion businesses that make clothes to order.
Ready-To-Wear Clothes Is apparel that is mass produced (opposite of custom-made). Ready-To-Wear is a cross between haute couture and mass market.
Mass-Market • Currently the fashion industry relies more on mass sales. • The mass caters for a wide range of customers, producing ready-to-wear clothes in large qualities and standard sizes. • Cheap materials, creatively used, & affordable.
High Fashion Designers • They cater to specialty stores or high-fashion department stores. • These Designers create original garments, as well as those that follow established fashion trends.
Designer • A person employed to create ideas for garments or accessories in the fashion industry.
Freelance Designers • Work for themselves, selling their designs to fashion designers and fashion houses, directly to shops, or to clothing manufactures.
Types of Fashion: • Accessories- articles such as jewelry, scarves, hats, handbags, shoes, worn or carried to complete a fashion look.

The Trickle-Down Effect: • A marketing phenomenon that affects many consumer goods. Initially a product may be so expensive that only the wealthy can afford it. Over time, the price will fall until it is inexpensive enough for the general public to purchase. • When applied to fashion, this theory states that when the lowest social class, or simply a perceived lower social class, adopts the fashion, it is no longer desirable to the leaders in the highest social class
What is FASHION? Anything that is currently “in”.
FadFashion • A fashion that is very popular for a short time. *Many times designers develop fads using a variety of colors, designs and unique ideas.
Classicfashion • This is a traditional style that can stay in fashion for a very long time. *Many times it is timeless such as a t-shirt, pearls, jeans (classic style), etc.
Status Symbol fashion • This is an item or clothing that gives the wearer a special feeling of importance. • (Example: “Designer Labels”, Coach, Gucci, LV, Chanel, etc.) • Can you think of STATUS SYMBOL clothes?
Fashion Cycle- a repeat introduction with little or no change.
