  2. What is Style? • Style is how an author says something, not what he says. • Style must fit with the story’s characters and setting in order to be believable. • There are different types of style…

  3. Figurative Language • Using words in a non-literal way • Most common types • Metaphor • Simile • Personification

  4. Metaphor • A description using a comparison to something familiar. • Switch on the Night by Ray Bradbury • A boy who is afraid of the dark and hates switching off a light switch is given a metaphor of this activity as switching on the night.

  5. Simile • A comparison between unlike things using “as” or “like”. • The Hidden Forest by Jeannie Baker • A boy who has little regard for sea life finds himself under the sea and discovers the forest of kelp.

  6. Personification • Giving human traits or qualities to non-human things or ideas. • The Little House by Virginia Lee Burton • The house in this story is drawn to look like a face, and her emotions and thoughts are expressed as the countryside around her is transformed into a city.

  7. Imagery • Appealing to our senses to create pictures in our mind. • The Little Island by Golden MacDonald • The author describes the island in a way that you can close your eyes and easily picture it.

  8. Allusion • A reference to a specific person, place, or thing from our common understanding, our past history or experiences, or our literature. • Each Peach Pear Plum by Janet and Allan Ahlberg • Do you know this game & these nursery rhyme characters? “Each peach, pear, plum, I spy Tom Thumb, Tom Thumb in the cupboard, I spy Mother Hubbard, Mother Hubbard in the cellar I spy Cinderella, Cinderella on the stairs I spy three bears, Three bears out hunting, I spy Baby Bunting, Baby Bunting fast asleep, I spy Bo Peep, Bo Peep on the hill, I spy Jack and Jill, Jack and Jill in the ditch, I spy the Wicked Witch, Wicked Witch over the wood, I spy Robin Hood…”
