  2. Where and when did the battle take place? • The battle started early Sunday morning on July 21st, 1862 • It took place in Manassas, Virginia, not far from Washington DC • The battle lasted one HORRIFIC day! • It ended July 22nd, 1861

  3. Who where the officers in charge? • The general that wanted to defeat the confederacy was Irvin McDowell, on the Union side. • Irvin McDowell graduated at west point in 1838. He became a very high ranking officer in the U.S army • The officers on the Confederate side were P.G.T Beauregard and Joseph E. Johnson. • Beauregard got to take the first shoots in the civil war during the bombardment of fort Sumter in April 1861 • Joseph E. Johnson never suffered from a direct hit in the civil war. A lot of people did suffer from a direct shoot

What happened during the battle? • During the bold and deadly battle, the North tried to out-flank the South and tried to push them back to Richmond • They did this so they would surrender and stop attacking Fort Sumter • Fighting raged on all day as each team fought strongly against one another • On the Union side, 460 casualties and 1312 missing or captured. • On the South side, 387 casualties and 13 missing or captured. • In the end, the south pulled out a victory against the south

How did this battle impact the war overall • As stated in the Civil War Trust “the battle persuaded the Lincoln administration and the North that this battle would be very long and costly”. • The Battle of The First Bull Run taught the North a lesson, to never underestimate the other army. • Also, since so many people died or got captured, the North decided to be more prepared for the future battles.

  6. Conclusion In conclusion, The First Battle Of Bull Run was a decisive victory for the south. After this battle, many deaths had occurred and the battlefield and surroundings was ruined. As a result of this battle, tensions grew greater. Although this was a win for the South, the North began preparations for their upcoming battles and ultimately made the South surrender at the end of the Civil war. After 4 years of fighting between the North and South, The Union prevailed and slavery was abolished
