  1. Welcome

  2. The Daniel Seminar • DANIEL • IN THE LION’S DEN

  3. This story is the story of a contest between two immutable laws: the law of the Medes and the Persians, which cannot be revoked (vs.8), and the law of Daniel’s God.

  4. JOSEPH

  5. ESTHER

  6. THE THREE HEBREWS

  7. The main point of these stories is that after a testing period characterised by divine silence, God at times chooses to manifest His saving presence on behalf of the suffering faithful.

  8. MEDO-PERSIAN KINGDOM In its heyday, the Medo-Persian kingdom was the largest empire up to that time, stretching from Egypt to India.

  9. Daniel chapter 6 is another in a series of records about the triumph of Daniel’s God over earthly powers.

  10. ISAIAH 43:11-13 • I, even I, am the Lord,And besides Me there is no saviour.I have declared and saved,I have proclaimed,And there was no foreign god among you; …

  11. ISAIAH 43:11-13 • …Therefore you are My witnesses,”Says the Lord, “that I am God.13 Indeed before the day was, I am He;And there is no one who can deliver out of My hand;I work, and who will reverse it?”

  12. ISAIAH 43:11-13 • … and you are my witnesses," declares the LORD, "and I am God. Also henceforth I am he; there is none who can deliver from my hand; I work, and who can turn it back?"

  13. Structure of Daniel 6 • The best satrap & a deadly decree (6: 1-9) • Arrest & sentence (6:10-18) • Deliverance (6:19-22) • Release & doom (6: 23,24) • A saving decree & the best satrap (6: 25-28)

  14. 1. The Best Satrap & a Deadly Decree (6:1-9)

  15. DANIEL 6:1 It pleased Darius to appoint 120 satraps to rule throughout the kingdom,

  16. DANIEL 6:2 with three administrators over them, one of whom was Daniel. The satraps were made accountable to them so that the king might not suffer loss.

  17. DANIEL 6:3 Now Daniel so distinguished himself among the administrators and the satraps by his exceptional qualities that the king planned to set him over the whole kingdom.

  18. Daniel’s successful career at the Medo-Persian court prompted jealousy in the hearts of his fellow administrators.

  19. The high position Daniel occupied here (Daniel 6:3-5) serves as a bridge between this and the preceding chapters.

  20. Both chapters 3 & 6 of Daniel talk about faithful people who are successful, something that gives rise to professional jealousy, resulting in a royal proclamation that is in conflict with the law of God.

  21. Similarities in the vocabulary used: • The list of officials (3:2, 3 and 6:7) • The Jews are said to pay no attention to the king (3:12 and 6:13) • The king’s statement “I decree” (3:29 and 6:26) Daniel chapters 3 and 6

  22. Similarities in structure: • The orders to worship false gods (3:1-6 and 6:1-8) • The faithful refuse the order • (3:16-18 and 6:10-12) • The faithful sentenced to death (3:19-23 and 6:15-17) Daniel chapters 3 and 6

  23. Similarities in structure: • The faithful delivered and the king repents (3:24-27 and 6:19-24) • The king utters a hymn of praise to God (3:28 and 6:26, 27) • The king issues a new decree • (3:29 and 6:26) Daniel chapters 3 and 6

  24. DANIEL 6:4 At this, the administrators and the satraps tried to find grounds for charges against Daniel in his conduct of government affairs, but they were unable to do so. They could find no corruption in him, because he was trustworthy and neithercorrupt nor negligent.

  25. DANIEL 6:5 Finally these men said, “We will never find any basis for charges against this man Daniel unless it has something to do with the law of his God.”

  26. DANIEL 6:6 So these administrators and satraps went as a group to the king and said: “May King Darius live forever!

  27. DANIEL 6:7 The royal administrators, prefects, satraps, advisers and governors have all agreed that the king should issue an edict and enforce…

  28. DANIEL 6:7 … the decree that anyone who prays to any god or human being during the next thirty days, except to you, Your Majesty, shall be thrown into the lions’ den.

  29. DANIEL 6:8 Now, Your Majesty, issue the decree and put it in writing so that it cannot be altered—in accordance with the law of the Medes and Persians, which cannot be repealed.”

  30. DANIEL 6:9 So King Darius put the decree in writing.

  31. The Chaldeans were quick to denounce the refusal of Daniel’s friends to worship the statue.

  32. In this story, Daniel’s Persian colleagues, opposed to his promotion, plan to trap him by creating a conflict between two unchangeable laws, one human and the other divine.

  33. Yet, in Daniel’s life, worship was regulated by another immutable law - God’s law.

  34. 2. Arrest and Sentence (6:10–18)

  35. DANIEL 6:10 • Now when Daniel learned that the decree had been published, he went home to his upstairs room where the windows opened toward Jerusalem….

  36. DANIEL 6:10 • …Three times a day he got down on his knees and prayed, giving thanks to his God, just as he had done before.

  37. DANIEL 6:11 • Then these men went as a group and found Daniel praying and asking God for help.

  38. DANIEL 6:13 • Then they said to the king, “Daniel, who is one of the exiles from Judah, pays no attention to you, Your Majesty, or to the decree you put in writing. He still prays three times a day.”

  39. DANIEL 6:14 • When the king heard this, he was greatly distressed; he was determined to rescue Daniel and made every effort until sundown to save him.

  40. Daniel’s habit was to give thanks to God three times a day regardless of what went on in his life.

  41. According to his daily habit, Daniel prays in his upstairs room, where the windows were opened. The place, the times, and the posture of his prayer remained unchanged.

  42. Moreover, they also try to put Daniel down by referring to him as a captive, saying “one of the exiles from Judah.”

  43. Moreover, Daniel’s enemies use exaggerated and false statements in order to accuse him before the king.

  44. DANIEL 6:15 Then the men went as a group to King Darius and said to him, “Remember, Your Majesty, that according to the law of the Medes and Persians no decree or edict that the king issues can be changed.”

  45. DANIEL 6:16 So the king gave the order, and they brought Daniel and threw him into the lions’ den. The king said to Daniel, “May your God, whom you serve continually, rescue you!”

  46. DANIEL 6:17 A stone was brought and placed over the mouth of the den, and the king sealed it with his own signet ring and with the rings of his nobles, so that Daniel’s situation might not be changed.

  47. DANIEL 6:18 Then the king returned to his palace and spent the night without eating and without any entertainment being brought to him. And he could not sleep.

  48. DANIEL 6:19 At the first light of dawn, the king got up and hurried to the lions’ den.

  49. DANIEL 6:20 • When he came near the den, he called to Daniel in an anguished voice, “Daniel, servant of the living God, has your God, whom you serve continually, been able to rescue you from the lions?”

  50. DANIEL 6:21,22 • Daniel answered, “May the king live forever! My God sent his angel, and he shut the mouths of the lions. They have not hurt me, because I was found innocent in his sight. …
