  1. International Sales Meeting 2008 New type of Add-on Monitor for Continuous PAH Nano Particles Surface SOOT by Hans Grimm

  2. International Sales Meeting 2007 AGENDA Motivation Technical Solution Specification Application Examples

  3. International Sales Meeting 2007 Apart from the PM values and the Size Distribution there is a growing interest to get a deeper insight in the composition of dust. Chemical analysis requires a lot of time, is expensiv and very often complicated. Therefore sensors are needed to provide fast, reliable and unexpensive data.

  4. What are PAH´s PAH: Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons PAHs are organic molecules consisting of between 2 and 6 Benzene rings. PAHs are solids at room temperature Almost all five-ring compounds are particulate bound

  5. Typical PAH´s

  6. Why measure PAH ? • PAH are known or suspected to be carcinogenic • Particle bound PAH are attached to small particles • Obtain additional information about particles in a size below 250 nm • Sources are • natural: volcanoes and natural fires • Anthropogenic: combustion, vehicle exhaust, cigarette and wood smoke,

  7. New speciation technologies • Particle bound PAH • Soot Particle

  8. Measuring Principle The sample flows continuously into the PAH sensor and through the excimer- lamp ionization region. Here particle-bound PAH molecules are ionized by photoelectric effect and loose an electron. The charged particles are captured on a filter in an electrometer. The flow of electrons to neutralize the particles for a current which is corllated to the particle concentration.
