About the Course • The course’s goal is to teach data management/analysis, problem solving and critical thinking skills. • You’ll learn how to use Microsoft Office to solve problems in a scientific or analysis-oriented context. • CS101 is a 4-credit hour GEC-listed course. • 2 hours in lecture (twice-weekly 50-minute lectures) • 2 hours from out-of-class work (primarily MyITLab & Homeworks)

Microsoft office Acceptable Versions • Office 2013 • Must include Access, Excel, Word, and PowerPoint. • Office 2010/365 are OK too. • Office for Mac is not OK • OIT has made a recent announcement saying that Office 365 will be available for FREE for all WVU students
Public computer labs Don’t have your own computer or Office? Office 2013 and MyITLab are installed at: • CS101 Open Lab • AIS Computer Labs • WVU Libraries public computers
Mac OS Virtual Machine • By running a virtual machine, you can use Office for Windows and MyITLab on a Mac. • CS101 has a ready-to-use virtual machine at http://cs101.wvu.edu/resources/software/mac-vm/ • We’ll be hosting a workshop on August 25 for students who want help getting started. Details will be posted on our website.
Storing your files • Keep copies of all your files in a secure place! • If others use them, you might be penalized. • If you work in a lab or other computers: • Recommended: Get a USB Flash drive • Use your MIX Google Drive account • Don’t:E-mail your files to yourself
Grades:Grading Scheme • Grades are not curved. • You can view your grades at https://cs101.wvu.edu/tools/gradebook/
Assignments:Homework Projects • There will be 6 homework projects. • 3 on Excel, 2 on Access, and 1 Problem Solving projects with multiple parts. • The assignments are designed to test and build your skills with using Office for data analysis. • 20% of the grade for each project comes from short answer data analysis questions. • Late homeworks have a 20% per day penalty, calculated based on your final score.
Assignments:MyITLab • MyITLab is a computer-based training system. • It simulates Microsoft Office. You’ll be asked to complete a variety of tasks to show your proficiency with the software. • 5 MyITLab due dates throughout the semester. • Requires MyITLab client on computer. • Installed in CS101 Open Lab, WVU Libraries, and OIT labs • Can be installed on home computers
Exams • There will be 2 regular exams plus a final. • 1 on Excel, 1 on Access, and a comprehensive final • The exam projects directly build on the homeworks. If you do well on the homeworks, you’ll do well on the exams. The opposite also applies. • There will usually be a review sessions for each exam. These are a great way to prepare.
MyITLabREgistration • Registration instructions are at http://cs101.wvu.edu/resources/myitlab/ • Read and follow the instructions! • If you need help, go to CS101 Open Lab.
MyITLab Grading • You must complete at least 190 questions during semester. • You earn bonus points for completing 191-200 questions. • There are over 220 questions in the system. You can skip a couple questions without penalty. • Late work is worth 50% credit.
Bonus Opportunities:Participation Bonus • You can earn up to 50 bonus points forin-class participation activities. • Project assigned by instructor. • Work completed and turned-in during class. • You must be present to receive points. • Bonus points may be unannounced and unscheduled. Come to class!
Academic Integrity • Academic integrity is very important to CS101. • Make sure you that fully read and understand the syllabus statements on academic integrity – not knowing is not an excuse. • On all assignments, you’re expected to do your own work. These are not group projects. • Do not let others access your files. You will be penalized if others submit projects from your work. • Bottom line: If you cheat, you will get caught. The penalties are harsh.
How to avoid violations • Don’t work with other people. Homeworks are not group projects. • Don’t share files with others, even if they claim they just want to “look” at them. • Don’t leave your files on a public computer or anywhere else someone could take them. • Don’t reuse files, even blank ones, because they may contain hidden details about the person who made the original file.
Academic Integrity:Standard Penalties First Offense Second Offense Failing grade (F) for the course. For egregious offenses, you might get an unforgivable F (UF). UFs can’t be removed from your academic record, even if you retake the class. They will have a severely negative impact on your chances for graduate school or a career. • Loss of credit for the assignment. • Plus, an additional 40-point penalty. • Altogether, the minimum penalty is 100 points, a full letter grade. • You are allowed to keep and earn your bonus points.
Academic Integrity:Policy Acknowledgement Form • Before you can get credit for any of your work, you must sign the CS101 Academic Integrity Policy Acknowledgement Form. • By signing this form, you certify that you understand CS101’s policies and will abide by them. • If you have questions, ask before signing the form.
Open Lab • Open Lab is a place for you to get help with your CS101 homework assignments. • Open Lab is held in 219 Armstrong Hall weekdays. Hours are at http://cs101.wvu.edu/openlab. • Start early on your assignments. Open Lab is very busy near homework due dates. • You need to try the assignments before asking for help in open lab. • We do not provide assistance with completing MyITLab Lessons.

Accessibility Accommodations • If you have a disability, you may be entitled to special accommodations. • Accommodations are granted by the Office of Accessibility Services. We can’t grant accommodations without their authorization. • We need to receive notice of authorized accommodations at least one week before we are to provide them (like for an exam).
Things to Do:Activate MyID • WVU MyID is used for signing into the Computers in class, to record your attendance and view grades. • If you haven’t done so already, you need to activate your MyID. • Instructions are at http://myid.wvu.edu. • Call OIT Help Desk at (304) 293-4444 or go to Open Lab if you need help with MasterID.
