  4. The Need for Restraint 1-2 1 Not many of you should become teachers, my fellow believers, because you know that we who teach will be judged more strictly. • Hebrews 13:17 • Obey your leaders and submit to their authority. They keep watch over you as men who must give an account. Obey them so that their work will be a joy, not a burden, for that would be of no advantage to you.

  5. The Need for Restraint 1-2 2 We all stumble in many ways. Anyone who is never at fault in what they say is perfect, able to keep their whole body in check.

  6. The Influence of the Tongue 3-4 • a) Horses 3 When we put bits into the mouths of horses to make them obey us, we can turn the whole animal.

  7. The Influence of the Tongue 3-4 b) Ships 4 Or take ships as an example. Although they are so large and are driven by strong winds, they are steered by a very small rudder wherever the pilot wants to go.

  8. The Power of the Tongue 5-8 5Likewise, the tongue is a small part of the body, but it makes great boasts.

  9. The Power of the Tongue 5-8 • a) Fire Consider what a great forest is set on fire by a small spark. 6The tongue also is a fire, a world of evil among the parts of the body. It corrupts the whole body, sets the whole course of one’s life on fire, and is itself set on fire by hell.

  10. The Power of the Tongue 5-8 • a) Fire • Matthew 12:34-3634You brood of vipers, how can you who are evil say anything good? For out of the overflow of the heart the mouth speaks.35The good man brings good things out of the good stored up in him, and the evil man brings evil things out of the evil stored up in him.36But I tell you that men will have to give account on the day of judgment for every careless word they have spoken.

  11. The Power of the Tongue 5-8 b) Animals 7 All kinds of animals, birds, reptiles and sea creatures are being tamed and have been tamed by mankind, 8 but no human being can tame the tongue. It is a restless evil, full of deadly poison. • Ephesians 4:29 • Do not let any unwholesome talk come out of your mouths, but only what is helpful for building others up according to their needs, that it may benefit those who listen.

  12. The Hypocrisy of the Tongue 9-12 9 With the tongue we praise our Lord and Father, and with it we curse human beings, who have been made in God’s likeness. 10 Out of the same mouth come praise and cursing. My brothers and sisters, this should not be.

  13. The Hypocrisy of the Tongue 9-12 11Can both fresh water and salt water flow from the same spring?

  14. The Hypocrisy of the Tongue 9-12 12My brothers and sisters, can a fig tree bear olives, or a grapevine bear figs? Neither can a salt spring produce fresh water.

  15. 3 … “Holy, holy, holy is the LORD Almighty;    the whole earth is full of his glory.” 4At the sound of their voices the doorposts and thresholds shook and the temple was filled with smoke. 5“Woe to me!” I cried. “I am ruined! For I am a man of unclean lips, and I live among a people of unclean lips, and my eyes have seen the King, the LORD Almighty.” 6Then one of the seraphs flew to me with a live coal in his hand, which he had taken with tongs from the altar.7With it he touched my mouth and said, “See, this has touched your lips; your guilt is taken away and your sin atoned for.”
