Facts on disabilities: • Up to three percent of the world’s population have intellectual disabilities (that’s 200 million people around the world). • Use of the R-word today is a big reason why negative stereotypes exist for those with disabilities • People with disabilities are capable and enjoy sharing life experiences!! • They can attend school, work, drive cars, get married, participate in decisions that affect them, and contribute to society in many ways… just like the rest of us.  • Throughout the world, over 60 percent of people still believe that people with intellectual disabilities should be segregated in schools and in the workplace.

  5. ACTIVITY: • Amongst your groups, think about a time that you were excluded from something (left out/not accepted). How did that feel?

  8. If you could have the chance to change the world and make sure that no one ever feels excluded anymore, would you take it? That is a big part of being a hero!!

  9. What is an R-word campaign??? An R-word campaign asks people to pledge to stop saying the R-word as a starting point toward creating more accepting attitudes and communities for all people. 

  10. Milford High School’s campaign: • Had three assembly's in one day • Awesome speaker (Brett!) • Powerful explanation on why the R-word is so hurtful • Skit to show feelings • Video clip for visual aspect • Banners for people to sign at lunch after the assembly • Stickers to thosewho pledged

  11. Results: • Emotional connection with audience (you could hear a pin drop!!) • Many more pledges that year • We educated the uneducated • Most importantly, we made a difference 
