Facts on disabilities: • Up to three percent of the world’s population have intellectual disabilities (that’s 200 million people around the world). • Use of the R-word today is a big reason why negative stereotypes exist for those with disabilities • People with disabilities are capable and enjoy sharing life experiences!! • They can attend school, work, drive cars, get married, participate in decisions that affect them, and contribute to society in many ways… just like the rest of us. • Throughout the world, over 60 percent of people still believe that people with intellectual disabilities should be segregated in schools and in the workplace.
The R-word is: • Exclusive • Offensive • Derogatory • Hurtful

ACTIVITY: • Amongst your groups, think about a time that you were excluded from something (left out/not accepted). How did that feel?
Have you ever been put down by others because they used a certain hurtful word? A picture paints a thousand words
If you could have the chance to change the world and make sure that no one ever feels excluded anymore, would you take it? That is a big part of being a hero!!
What is an R-word campaign??? An R-word campaign asks people to pledge to stop saying the R-word as a starting point toward creating more accepting attitudes and communities for all people.
Milford High School’s campaign: • Had three assembly's in one day • Awesome speaker (Brett!) • Powerful explanation on why the R-word is so hurtful • Skit to show feelings • Video clip for visual aspect • Banners for people to sign at lunch after the assembly • Stickers to thosewho pledged
Results: • Emotional connection with audience (you could hear a pin drop!!) • Many more pledges that year • We educated the uneducated • Most importantly, we made a difference
To start your own campaign: • Get the help of an advisor • Contact Special Olympics MA • Use R-word resources from the website: • http://www.specialolympicsma.org/what-we-do/transformative-education/masc_leadership_resources/ (scroll down to the R-word section) • For other information, feel free to email me at k_digre@aol.com
Language affects attitudes. Attitudes impact actions.“When you use the word retarded, you are taking away my humanity.”
