Rapid Construction of Large Urban Scenes for Training and Mission Rehearsal A low cost, standalone stereogrammetric terrain database building generator developed under Navy SBIR N02-192 Rocket City Geospatial Conference October 2007
Generating buildings for visual terrain databases is too slow • Developing buildings for large urban terrain databases has five main challenges: • Generating large urban scenes is labor intensive • High level of technical skill is currently required • Few existing database generation tools are capable of stereogrammetry • Existing rapid building generators are not “open” and require significant engineering integration • Large texture budgets slow down real-time applications Large Scale Terrain Database Manually Created for JSF Using Manual Techniques
Improvement in Terrain Database Generation is Needed DOD Wide • Solution needed for all DOD agencies • Mission planning, mission rehearsal, training, test and evaluation and post op analysis all use visual terrain databases • New focus is “geospecific”, i.e. buildings and features are modeled in correct geographic positions • Stereogrammetric generation greatly improves feature placement accuracy • Low cost stereogrammetric solution could support large number of database generation facilities • Navy/ USMC Programs developing geospecific buildings for urban scenes for aerial, sea-based, ground-based programs (eg. JSF, F/A-18 E/F, V-22, CH-46, Aegis, DDX, LCS, LAV, M1) • Air Force, Army programs (F/A-22, Stryker, AH-64, M1) other government agencies: FAA Technical Center, SOFPREP
Baseline Technology • Functionality varies greatly from system to system • Lack of geo-specific positioning creates confusing visual simulations • Only most expensive systems support stereo photogrammetry • Complex and time consuming construction process • Complex file output formats create incompatibility between systems • Input format compatibility is often limited, i.e. cannot read or use stereo imagery formats such as NTM satellite data, ESRI shapefiles™, OpenFlight™, CAD file formats, etc. • Existing building feature generators require large software license investment • Cost from $10K to 50K+ for full featured stereogrammetric system
Standalone Stereogrammetic Building Generator • Rapid geospecific stereo capable building generator • Compatible with file formats across DOD and civilian applications • Geospecific buildings placement with option for use of geotypical or geospecific textures • Provides capability for sufficient realism without compromising speed • Low cost • Target price is $1000 to $2500 is a fraction of the cost of other stereogrammetric modelers • Building models are portable to multiple simulations without complex software integration and test
Stereogrammetric Approach • Aerial and satellite imagery is collected so that each picture overlaps the previous one by at least 60% • Overlap provides an area in the two images of the same place from different angles • Aero triangulation allows accurate determination of exact x,y position of each pixel in the image • Images are mathematically aligned along the flight line to create a stereo view • This enables viewing and measurement in 3D

Combining Images Produces Stereo Shot 2 Shot 1 Stereo Overlap Area Flight Path
Stereo Viewing UsingShuttered Glasses • Electronically shuttered glasses alternate putting one image in the left eye and the other image in the right eye • If done at a high enough image refresh rate the brain processes the images just as in real life • Stereo photogrammetric feature extraction work stations use this method • This the method used for CityClick™
Prototype CityClick™ Tool CityClick™ Software Tool • CityClick™ uses stereogrammetry, orthophoto’s, and GIS building footprints to create buildings for large urban areas • CityClick™ is compatible with both DOD technical means and commercially available input data • Semi-automated features facilitates rapid building modeling • Stereogrammetry ensures building footprints match terrain texture • CityClick™ generates several buildings per minute as opposed to several minutes per building
Basic residential building automatically generated with CityClick™ Multiple shapes and eaves automatically generated in CityClick™ Current Development Status of CityClick™ • Prototype algorithms demonstrated in Phase II of SBIR N02-192 • Additional feature development completed under Phase II of SBIR N04-015 completed April 2007 • Currently seeking Phase III funding options under SBIR N02-192
