Resource is divided into 8 parts: • Part 1 – What Makes a Good Questionnaire • Part 2 – Installing Survey Software • Part 3 – Creating the First Survey • Part 4 – Using Tokens • Part 5 – Adding Conditional Statements • Part 6 – Styling the Survey • Part 7 – Collecting Data • Part 8 – Exporting and Analysing Data
Tips for creating a good questionnaire: • Use simple language • Avoid jargon • Keep questions short and specific • Avoid ambiguities • Avoid double-barrelled questions (“and”, “or”) • Avoid double negatives • Do not overload the respondent's memory • Avoid hypothetical questions • Do not make assumptions
Tips for increasing response rates: • Design a questionnaire that is easy to navigate • Clear questions and structure the questionnaire in sections • Do not ask too many questions – attention is limited • If you have to ask many questions, state the number of questions beforehand • Stress anonymity of the questionnaire • Make the e-mail request personal. Genuine request – do not spam! • Send reminders to people who have not responded • Add additional info (pages left, percentage completed)
2. Installing Survey Software: • Requirements to install the survey (MySQL, PHP, 60 MB web space) • Create MySQL database • Download survey software on computer • Upload the survey on webserver and extract it • Change folder permissions (7-5-5) • Edit survey configurations and create admin account • Connect survey software with database • Login and change password
3. Creating the First Survey: • Change settings of survey (languages, title, description, theme, start/end date, cookies, e-mail notification ) • Create question groups to represent pages of survey • Create questions and set type of question (yes/no) • Add label sets for questions • Test the survey before activating it • Browse summary of responses
4. Using Tokens: • Useful for using e-mail scripts • Change the survey to closed-group mode • Add token entries (name, e-mail) • Edit the e-mail scripts • Send the e-mail invitations • Delete the tokens table to allow for survey to be public again
5. Adding Conditional Statements: • Useful for adding conditions to questions that depend on previous answer • Add additional question and edit the conditions • Select Comparison operators (and, or) • Possibility to add more than one conditional statement • Can be used as screening question at beginning
6. Styling the Survey: • Knowledge of HTML and CSS required • Copy the template and create a new one • Edit the CSS files to changing the style of the survey (colours, background) • Edit the HTML files to change the content of the survey (progress bar, buttons, titles) • Possibility to edit the files without the template editor, manually
7. Collecting Data: • Can collect data using tokens • Possibility to use e-mail scripts to send mass e-mails with one click • Can collect data from different social networks (Facebook, Twitter) • Be friendly, personal avoid spamming • Consider shortening the length of URL (www.bit.ly)
8. Exporting and Analysing Data: • View summary of responses within LimeSurvey • Possibility to display responses within LimeSurvey in text format or HTML format • Can create pie charts from the responses • Recommended to export responses to MS Excel • Edit data to produce meaningful findings. Consider splitting into categories • Create visual graphs from data (bar charts) • Draw conclusions based on analysis
