Daily Goals • Content: • We will understand difference between a strict construction and a loose construction of the Constitution • We evaluate Jefferson’s opinion on the role of the national government • Literacy: • We explain through writing (to Mr. Kelly) and discussing (with a partner) today’s important ideas • Social: • We will actively participate in partner discussion • We will talk to new people today • We will raise our hands to participate in class discussion

First Political Parties (p.2) Federalists • Alexander Hamilton: • Powerful Federal Government • Loose Construction of the Constitution: it can be ready loosely. • Is it hinted at? • Then you can do • it. Democratic-Republicans • Thomas Jefferson: • Powerful States • Strict Construction of the Constitution: it should be ready very strictly. • If it doesn’t Specifically say, You can’t do it.

  3. Thomas Jefferson: President #3 • P.6 • What evidence did you learn about that reflected Jefferson’s Democratic-Republican beliefs? (strict constructionist) • How did he step away from his D-R values during his presidency (loose constructionist)

  4. Election of 1800 • Revolution of 1800: D-R take over power from Federalists. • First peaceful transition of power between rivals • Showed democracy could work • (continued)

  5. Election of 1800 • Jefferson & Burr tie for President! • Burr supposed to be VP, but won’t step aside • Constitution says House of Reps decides ties in electoral college • Alexander Hamilton (Federalist) backs Jefferson, so he wins

  6. Burr challenges Hamilton to a duel and kills him. • Later, Burr is disgraced after he is charge with trying to overthrow Jefferson to become King USA

  7. Marbury vs. Madison • Judicial Review: Supreme Court claims right to declare laws unconstitutional. • Adam’s appointed Marbury at the last minute to get back at Jefferson • Think: Jefferson and D-R’s didn’t like the ruling, why?

  8. Embargo Act • Britain and French kept stealing U.S. ships, goods, and sailors. • Jefferson declare an embargo on trade with all foreign nations. • Meant to hurt Britain and France, but hurts USA more. • Embargo: ban on trade

  9. Louisiana Purchase • Napoleon, Emperor of France offered to sell the Louisiana Territory to USA. • Louisiana Territory: all lands drained by Mississippi River • Think: Did Jefferson think he had the power to buy it? Why? • Louis and Clark: explorers sent by Jefferson to map newly bought territory.
