Oxidation-Reduction Reactions & Electrochemistry Mr. Chapman Chemistry 30
Oxidation-Reduction Reactions • Rusting cars, burning campfires, battery-operated toy cars, and ripening fruit are all examples of chemical reactions. • Although initially it does not appear that they have anything in common, they actually do. • All of these reactions are called oxidation-reduction reactions, also called REDOX reactions.
Oxidation and Reduction • Oxidation and reduction originally had different meanings, but are now known in a much broader sense. • Oxidation referred to substances combining with oxygen, such as the rusting of metal or the burning of campfire. • Reduction referred to the process of converting metal ores into pure metals.
Oxidation and Reduction • Both terms have much broader meanings now. • In all oxidation-reduction reactions (from now on known as REDOX reactions), there is an exchange of electrons between two different substances. • In a redox reaction, one substance must GAIN electrons while another substance must LOSE electrons.
Electrons • Recall that electrons are the subatomic particles that circle the nucleus. • Electrons have a charge of -1, and are able to be transferred from one atom to another. This is the basis of REDOX reactions.
Examples of REDOX Reactions • REDOX reactions are sometimes very complicated, but others are very simple. • For example, if you combined copper (Cu) and silver nitrate (AgNO3), you would see the formation of a fuzzy material on the surface of the copper. • Watch the following video of this simple REDOX reaction, and try to determine what the fuzz is all about (ha ha ha).
REDOX Reactions • http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y3Dcv_QnQzk&NR=1 • Were you able to determine what was formed inside the beaker that contained copper and silver nitrate? • The fuzzy material that was formed on the surface of the copper wire was pure silver metal.
Copper and Silver Nitrate REDOX • Copper reacting with silver nitrate is an example of a REDOX reaction in which one substance is oxidized and the other substance is reduced. • The overall chemical equation can help us to determine what happens when copper combines with silver nitrate.
