Naming Ionic Compounds • Positively charged ions are called cations. • Negatively charged ions are called anions.
Naming Ionic Compounds • When naming an ionic compound, the cation is ALWAYS named first. • What is the charge of the cation? • Metals with only one possible charge: • When naming the compound just use the name of the element. • Examples: • Alkali Metals- always +1 • Alkaline-Earth Metals- always +2 • Others- Aluminum (+3), Zinc (+2), Silver (+1)
Naming Ionic Compounds • For metals with more than one possible charge: • Use the name of the element PLUS the charge in Roman numerals copper (I) copper (II) iron (II) iron (III) lead (II) lead (IV) mercury (I) mercury (II) tin (II) tin (IV)
Naming Ionic Compounds • Anions are negatively charged elements • Negatively charged elements are given the suffix “-ide” • Examples: O-2: F-1: S-2: Cl-1: Br-1: I-1: oxide fluoride chloride sulfide iodide bromide
Naming Ionic Compounds • Practice • MgO: • H2S: • FeS: • NaI: • FeO: magnesium oxide sulfide hydrogen iron sulfide (II) sodium iodide iron oxide (II)
