The Pomegranate By Eavan Boland Instructor: Wu, Yi-Ying
Demeter (Ceres) and Persephone Demeter has a daughter, Persephone, whom Hades, the god of the Underworld, wants as his wife. Persephone's father Zeus agrees to this without even mentioning it to the mother Demeter. Hades tricks Persephone by making an amazing flower grow for her; when she reaches out to pick it, the god explodes out of the ground in his horse-drawn chariot, and drags her, crying and screaming, away underground.
Demeter is full of grief and anger when she finds out what has happened. She stops all the grain from growing and the world becomes a wasteland. Finally Zeus realizes he can't win, so he sends Hermes down to Hades to bring Persephone back.
Hades agrees to let Persephone go, but he secretly slips her a pomegranateseed to eat before she leaves. Demeter and Persephone are overjoyed to see each other, but Demeter explains to Persephone that because she ate the fruit before she left Hades, from now on she'll have to spend a third of every year underground with him.
