The main weapons they used were: swords, axes, spears, but daggers and bows were also used. For armour in battle the Vikings wore helmets, shields, and chain mail or leather tunics. Viking Weaponry andArmoury In history the Vikings were renowned for their fighting ability. Their strength and skill not only came from their gods, but the many weapons and armour that they fought with. Footwear for Vikings was not a hassle because most of the battles were fought bare foot and the main type of transport to the battle was via ships.
SWORD The sword was simply a weapon to kill and injure with. Did you know? Swords were so special to the Vikings that the Viking Warriors even named their swords.
Bow and arrow The purpose was to plunge an arrow into the enemy far away, to leave casualty or dead and to decrease number as soon as possible. Did you know? Bows and arrows were usually firstly used in hunting.
AXE • Another main weapon for the Viking warriors was the Axe. It was very strong and could easily cut through armour and give the enemy a fatal wound. Did you know? Many owned one because they used it for their housework!
SPEAR Did you know? Winning Mr. Popularity in the Viking Society was the spear! Spears could be used for stabbing and also thrown from far distances at a target making them very perilous
Dagger/Sax These were just short sword used to stab or wound the enemy. Did you know? This is a Viking sax and the hilt is the shape of a bird
Helms • One of the main armour that they wore was helmets. Did you know? Horns did not protrude out of the sides of these helmets! They were supposed to keep your head, nose, eyes and neck from damage- depending on the design of the helm.
Shields Shields were a fantastic means of protection because it concealed the shoulder all the way down to the knee being 1 metre in diameter. Did you know? These shields were painted in bright colours, perhaps to stand out or make a simple fashion statement! You could probably even dong someone over the head with it!
Chainmail Used to save the upper body from any deep wounds inflicted by sharp weapons. Sometimes they’d wear a leather tunic for extra safety Did you know? Chainmail was up to 12 kilograms!
