SEXUALLY TRANSMITTED DISEASES (STD) • STD’S ARE BACTERIAL, VIRAL, OR PARASITIC INFECTIONS THAT ARE TRANSMITTED DURING VAGINAL, ORAL OR ANAL CONTACT WITH AN INFECTED PERSON. • THERE ARE 22 DIFFERENT STD’S • IN THE US, THERE ARE OVER 15.3 MILLION NEW CASES DIAGNOSED ANNUALLY. • AN ESTIMATED 65 MILLION AMERICANS HAVE AN INCURABLE STD. • 15% OF THE INFERTILITY IN WOMEN IS DUE TO AN STD. • IT IS ESTIMATED THAT OVER 80% OF WOMAN WHO WILL BE TESTED AT AGE 50 WILL BE POSITIVE FOR HPV • OVER 10 BILLION DOLLARS ARE SPENT ANNUALLY TO TREAT AND CONTROL STD’S • FOR FY 05, NAVAL STATION NORFOLK PERSONNEL LOST A TOTAL OF 3,286.5 MANHOURS (411 DAYS) DUE TO STD CONCERNS
HERPES (HSV) • Incurable viral disease – Herpes Simplex I or II • 1 out of five (over age 12) have had HSV • Symptoms occur in about 14 days • First outbreak can be pronounced and sores may last from 2-4 weeks
HERPES (HSV) • Antiviral medications help reduce outbreaks – But do not cure the disease
HPV - WARTS • 30 different strains of virus are responsible for genital warts or abnormal pap smears • At least 50% of sexually active men and women acquire the disease sometime in their life. • Most people show no signs or symptoms, but are capable of transmitting the disease
HPV - WARTS • There is no cure for HPV. Treatment is directed at the skin growths or abnormal cells on the pap smear • Over time, HPV becomes dormant
SYPHILIS • Called the great imitator since the symptoms can look like any number of other diseases • Many people will show no signs or symptoms for years • Primary syphilis normally shows as a single sore in 10 to 90 days from contact
SYPHILIS • The primary syphilis chancre (sore) lasts for 3-6 weeks and will go away on its own • Left untreated, syphilis progresses into secondary syphilis • Symptoms normally start several weeks after the chancre disappears
SYPHILIS • The late phase of syphilis starts from the minute the rash disappears • Symptoms may not show up for years but may include – damage to the brain, nerves, eyes, heart, liver, joints and bones. • As the disease progresses it can lead to difficulty coordinating muscles, blindness, dementia and eventually death
GONORRHEA • Some men and most women do not show symptoms until late in the disease process • Normally symptoms appear in men in 2-5 days (sometimes up to 30 days) • Symptoms include a burning sensation when urinating, white/yellow/greenish discharge
GONORRHEA • Symptoms in women are mild to start with and can be mistaken for a bladder or vaginal infection. • Symptoms in women include a painful or burning sensation when urinating, increased vaginal discharge, or vaginal bleeding between periods. • Both men and women are at risk of serious complications from the disease no matter how mild the symptoms are

CHLAMYDIA • Know as the “silent” disease – ¾ of the infected women and about ½ of infected men have no symptoms • If symptoms do occur, they start 1-3 weeks after infected. • In a woman symptoms include abnormal vaginal discharge or burning sensation when urinating • Men may have a clear to yellowish discharge and burning when urinating
CHLAMYDIA • If untreated, Chlamydia infections can progress to serious reproductive and other health problems
HEPATITIS B • Hepatitis B is a serious disease caused by a virus that attacks the liver. The virus can cause lifelong infection, cirrhosis (scarring) of the liver, liver cancer, liver failure and death • Symptoms are normally seen in 60-90 days and include jaundice, nausea, vomiting, loss of appetite, abdominal pain, joint pain • THERE IS NO CURE, but there is currently an immunization against the disease
