Introduction • UAE has been witnessing an exceptional economical revolution in all vital sectors. • Photovoltaic systems implementations are on the rise worldwide. • A computer modeling tool was developed to predict PV system power generation in the UAE using MATLAB. • Many reasons were the driving force for us to research, study and analyze BIPV systems.
PV in The UAE • PV market in the UAE is still amateur. • Pioneer steps have been taken by UAE leaders to turn the country to a global centre for future energy: • Abu Dhabi’s $15 billion future energy initiative (Masdar) • World future energy summit (WFES)
Project MotivationUAE Power & Environmental Challenges • Electricity demand in UAE has been rapidly increasing in recent years due to population & economical growth. • By 2015, the installed power capacity is estimated to be around 14 GW investments of $10 billion. • UAE has one of the highest per capita CO2 emission rates in the world. • High CO2 emissions lead to: • Warmer and drier climate. • More frequent heat waves and natural disasters (i.e. floods).
Parameters Affecting The Efficiency of PV Systems in UAE • Solar radiation: • Geographical location. • Orientation. • Array tilt angle. • Shading: • The PV generator would deliver its best performance if the sun light hits the panels homogenously. • Temperature: • The temperature influences the efficiency of PV by approximately -0.4%/ K.
Parameters Affecting The Efficiency of PV Systems • Soiling: • which is accumulation of dust and dirt may reduce the available PV generator output. • Weather conditions. • Source of dust. • PV array tilt angle. • Other factors: • For example (wiring losses, component efficiencies, etc).
TMY: • Collection of selected weather data for a specific location, generated from a data bank much longer than a year in duration. • TMY data is frequently used in building simulation and solar systems design. • Weather data was obtained from National Center of Meteorology & seismology. • Global radiation on horizontal • Temperature • Sun hour • Wind speed • Humidity • 3-year TMY data was created using Al-Ain weather data. Typical Meteorological Year Typical Meteorological Year
Typical Meteorological Year Annual global radiation in Al Ain = 2250 kWh/m2Average daily solar radiation = 6.180 kWh/m2
Distribution of Solar Radiation Source: METEONORM software by Meteotest
Types of Radiation Direct Diffuse Albedo Global Radiation = Direct + Diffuse + Albedo
Angle Definition PV generator orientation (α : azimuth angle) Best orientation in the UAE is South (α = 0°)
Effect of Inclination Angle on Global Radiation β=0° β= 20°
Effect of Inclination Angle on Global Radiation β=60° β= 90°
Optimum Inclination Angle Optimum inclination angle in Al Ain, UAE
PV Generator Electrical Behavior • To do the power analysis of the PV generator, the following steps were followed: • Determination of the characteristic parameters of the cells that make up the PV generator under STC. • Determination of the temperature of the cells under the operating conditions being considered. • Determination of the characteristic parameters of the cells under the operating conditions being considered. • Determination of the characteristic parameters of the PV generator.
Grid-Tied Inverter Selection Array Configuration Outputs Pmax – Vmax – Vmin - Imax • Comparing to DC ratings of the inverter • Maximum Power • Maximum Voltage • Minimum Voltage • Maximum Current Inverter is selected
Case Study Input parameters to MATLAB tool
Effect of The Irradiance & Temperature on The PV Generator • First - order effects: • Irradiance effect on ISC(positive impact). • Temperature effect on VOC( negative impact). • Second - order effects: • Irradiance effect on VOC(logarithmic increase). • Temperature effect on ISC(very slight effect!).
Conclusion • In this paper we have proposed a new comprehensive Matlab-based BIPV software. • This software will be used in UAE to study feasibility of BIPVs in different areas of the country. • Many BIPV related data can be computed using this software. • The process of studying various areas in UAE using this software will be launched in January 2009.
