Background • Although considered a bird, penguins or Spheniscidae do not have wings, but rather flippers. • They stand between 15 inches to 3.5 feet tall, and are expert swimmers.
Why they’re endangered Bycatch Climate Change • This practice can lead to accidental capture or drowning in nets. • These species depend on sea ice for access to food and for places to breed. But the sea ice has been disappearing, and penguin populations along with it.
Climate Change • Climate change plays a huge role in the endangerment of penguins. • When Arctic sea ice to melts, it threatens penguins who need the ice to hunt. • Warmer water kills off a lot of the marine life, which penguins feed on.
Continued • Hunting them for oil • The weather • Lack of food supply • Destroying their natural environment • Taking their eggs
Top Endangered Galápagos Penguin • Less than 2,000 remaining • Spheniscus mendiculus • Weighing just over 5.5 lbs • 19 inches long • Inhabit the ocean
Top Endangered Southern Rock Hopper Penguin • They were named for their distinctive hopping movements over the rocky hills and cliffs. • Eudyptes chrysocome • Inhabits oceans and coasts • 4.4 to 6.6 lbs
Protection • All species of penguins are protected now. • One of the strictest areas when it comes to the protection of penguins is in the Antarctic. • Under the treaty initiated in 1959 it is illegal to harm a penguin in any way. This treaty was updated in 1991 with the penalties with severe repercussions.
Near Threatened Emperor Penguin • Although not endangered, the Emperor penguin could become endangered in some years. • Aptenodytesforster • Tallest and heaviest penguins • Can reach 48 inches and 99lbs
How Can We Protect Penguins? • We can find a new home for penguins. Penguins are becoming extinct because they have no place that can offer them a home so finding a new place is important. We can find new places that have rich resources and food that can provide for penguins. Then we can offer artificial security care to care for penguins and make a new place where no external factors will cause penguins to die. Another thing we also can do is to take care of young penguins during the time when the penguins don't have a good immunity against high temperature.
