Background • To study the effect – on migrating humpback whales – of a range of environmental and anthropomorphic factors • Needed more data than could be recorded manually, with fewer transcription errors • Wanted accurate, noninvasive position fixing • Needed data visualization and analysis • Had to be very inexpensive, and feasible for a tiny team to develop – assemble not build, wherever possible • Standards-based modular design wanted • Handheld computer technology had sufficiently matured (2004) Whale and Seal Foundation 2007
