  1. The Rules of Survival By: NancyWerlin

  2. This book starts off slow but has lots of action. Its starts off with popsicles. Yes popsicles. Callie and Matt go to the store one night, after their mother has left, to get popsicles. They go to the store and they see a man sticking up to a man that was at least twice as big as he is. The man was just yelling at his kid for buying something without his permission, the much smaller man was, Murdoch. Murdoch starts this story. The kids wanted someone who would stand up for them and would listen to what was really happening, they hoped that Murdoch would be that someone. Plot

  3. Matt-Your average 13 year old boy with one exception…he has to take care of two younger sisters with little help from adults. Characters Nikki-Psycho person who makes a valid attempt to ruin the lives of everyone around her. Murdoch-Nikki’s ex-boyfriend who turns everyone’s world upside down. Callie-Nikki’s middle child who is very smart and has ambitions of maybe being a doctor someday. Emmy-Nikki’s youngest child who gets into trouble because of her particular love for Murdoch. Ben-Nikki’s ex-husband who is so afraid of Nikki that he cant even help his own kids. Aunt Bobbie-Is the sister and previous victim of Nikki. She lives downstairs but can’t open her eyes to see that her nieces and nephews are going through the same tormenting she did.

  4. This book takes place in Southie, a suburb of Boston, Massachusetts. It might be described as the Ghetto of Boston. It is a good place for students at UMass-Boston to live. More specifically Nikki, Bobby, Matt, Callie, and Emmy live in a three story house that has been converted into apartments so that they can rent out the first floor for a little extra income. Setting

  5. This book is person vs. person, person vs. self, and person vs. nature/society. The reason it is person vs. person is because the children are dealing with their mother, because she is always trying to hurt them, but also with the other adults in their life to get them to pay attention. Another type of conflict is person vs. self because Matt has to constantly fight his instincts more so towards the end of the book. It is also person vs. nature/society because most people around them wouldn’t believe that a mother would do this to her children because society sees mothers as kind, caring people who would never hurt her children. Conflict

  6. This book is in second person. It is a letter from Matt to his youngest sister Emmy. He is telling the events that happened because of Murdoch. He often stops and says things like “Do you remember that Emmy?” so it is obviously in second person. Point of View

  7. Slap in the face Thrown against the wall Beaten senselessDid it help you at all?Did it help with your painDid it make him come backDid you ever wonder how it feltTo always be under attack? So I just sit in my roomAnd I look at the ceilingAfraid to tell anyone what I'm feeling Please help meI can't take anymoreSuicide failedAnd no body's thereJust walk awaythat's what you always doyou don't care what you put me throughIt's all over nowAnd you want me back??I can't just go back nowI'm no longer under attack Poem About Abuse Just something to let people know that not everything is OK. Not everything a kid tells you is a lie. I'm 13 and I just got out of an abusive home. Everybody thought I was lying. I finally got someone to believe me and get me out of there. - Amanda

  8. Quotes About Survival “Man can live about forty days without food, about three days without water, about eight minutes without air, but only for one second without hope” “We are driven by five genetic needs: survival, love and belonging, power, freedom, and ‘fun’.” -William Glasser
