  2. Homework Questions?

  3. Homework – page 243 #45

  4. Roots of Real Numbers Section 5-5

  5. Square Roots • For any real numbers a and b, if a2=b, then a is a square root of b. • If b>0, then there is both a positive and a negative square root. • If b<0, then there is no real square root

  6. nth Roots • For any real numbers a and b, if an=b, then a is a nth root of b.

  7. Simplifying Radicals • The principal root is the nonnegative root • If the radical sign is given to you, only find the principal root. • If a – or a ± proceeds the radical, first find the principal root, then apply the – or ±. • If you introduce a radical, consider all possible roots

  8. Example 1 – Simplify

  9. You-Try #1 – Simplify

  10. Simplifying with Absolute Values • When you find a root of an even power and get an odd power, put it inside an absolute value. • Ensures that your answer is non-negative.

  11. Example 2 – Simplify

  12. You-Try #2 – Simplify

  13. Approximating Radicals • Square roots: [2nd] [x2] radicand • Higher roots (TI-83): index [MATH] [5:x√] radicand

  14. Example 3 • Approximate the following to three decimal places

  15. You-Try #3 • Approximate the following to three decimal places
