3. The 3 A’s of Safety • Aware of hazards on your route • railroad x-ings, poor road conditions, blind intersections, wide road cracks • Alertat all times • Never assume that cars see you especially at intersections • Expect the unexpected • Alive • The ultimate goal Top Ten
4. Have the Right Cycling Gear • Helmet • Must be fit properly. • Gloves • Better grip, especially when it is wet • Glasses • Protect your eyes from flying debris • Clothing • Reflective to add to visibility Top Ten
5. Have the Right Equipment • Lights • White / amber on the front (required by law) • Red flashing on the rear (reflector minimum required by law) • Bell / Whistle • To warn others as you are overtaking them Top Ten
6. Know Your Position (Manoeuvrability) The Highway Traffic Act says that a cyclist is to ride as far to the right as practicable not possible. Think of practicable as meaning safe Close to travel lane 1 metre 1 metre Top Ten
7. Never Ride the Sidewalk • Sidewalks are more dangerous than the Road • At intersections vehicles are not looking for a fast moving bike on the sidewalk. • Sidewalks are for pedestrians • Too many obstacles like strollers, dogs, small unpredictable children (and adults too). Top Ten
8. Stay Visible and be Predictable • Stay in motorists’ field of vision. • Ride in straight line, no weaving in and out. 1 metre Top Ten

10. Develop Your Cycling Skills • Take a course to improve your confidence. • Learn some basic skills like: • Straight line riding (shoulder check) • Dodging hazards • Quick turns and panic stops • Practice! Top Ten
