Purpose of Session • Collaborate and share ideas that have successfully encouraged discourse in your classroom with struggling students.
Our Story… • We’re piloting a new seminar program. Students have a double block of math every day. • Creating lessons that promote mathematical discourse has proven to be difficult at times. • We image other teachers face this frustration too!
Successful Example • Topic: Estimation • Pictures, that students can “buy”, are placed around the room. • Students had a sheet that had them buy at least 5 items. • Students rounded the cost of each item that they wanted to buy. • At the end, students had to add up how much they would approximately spend • Class discussion • Why did they round the way they did? • Compare answers with others.
Now it’s your turn… • Think of an activity that you have used for one of the topics that successfully captured the attention of your students and encouraged discussion. • Break into groups, and please share your examples. • Complete the handout and we will collect examples that you don’t mind sharing! • Activities will be emailed to you all for future use!
