  1. Welcome! 9/3/13 • Conclusions • World of Chemistry Video

  2. Good Conclusion The purpose of this experiment was to identify which substances caused the chemical reactions in part A of the experiment. I found that calcium chloride caused the temperature change because with every reaction involving calcium chloride a temperature increase was observed. Water and phenol red is the cause of color change because when I mixed water with phenol red an orange color appeared. The calcium chloride, sodium bicarbonate, and water caused the gas formation because the only reaction that bubbled was when these three substances were combined.

  3. Claim & Evidence • I found that calcium chloride caused the temperature change because with every reaction involving calcium chloride a temperature increase was observed.

  4. Welcome 9/4/13 • Hand-in Mg/HCl Lab Graphs • Go over Notecards & Reading guide • Notes: Law of conservation of mass, chemical reactions, and phases of matter • Activity

  5. What is Mass? • The amount of matter an object contains. • Standard Unit: Grams (g)

  6. Law of Conservation of mass • Mass is always conserved! • Can NOT be created or destroyed! • Mass of products always equals mass of reactants

  7. Review of Chemical Reactions • Reactants and products • Example: NaOH + HCl ↔ NaCl + H2O Reactants Products

  8. States of Matter • Solid • Liquid • Gas

  9. States of Matter: Solid • Definite shape • Definite Volume • Not Easily Compressed

  10. States of Matter: Liquid • Indefinite Shape • Definite Volume • Not easily compressed

  11. States of Matter: Gas • Indefinite Shape • Indefinite Volume • Easily compressed

  12. Welcome! 9/5/13 • Go over worksheet from yesterday • Separating mixtures Notes • Desert vs. Dessert activity

  13. Separating Mixtures • Mixtures are made up of two different substances that can be separated physically.

  14. Techniques for separating mixtures • Filtration: Separating a solid from a liquid by containing the solid and draining the liquid • Separating pasta from water • Separating sand from water

  15. Techniques for separating mixtures 2. Distillation: separating a liquid from another substance by boiling off the liquid then condensing in back to a liquid separately. • Two liquids with different boiling points • Water and something dissolved
