Zeugma By Jack Manzler
Definition & How it is Used • Zeugma - includes several similar rhetorical devices, all involving a grammatically correct linkage of two or more parts of speech by another part of speech. • Examples of Zeugmas have one subject with two or more verbs, a verb with two or more direct objects, or two or more subjects with one verb. • A zeugma is used to show relationships between ideas and actions more clearly.
Types of Zeugmas • There are three types of Zeugmas: the prozeugma, the diazeugma, and the hypozeugma. • In one form of prozeugma, the linking word precedes the words linked. • In a diazeugma there is the single subject with multiple verbs. • In hypozeugma the linking word follows the words it linked together.
Examples • Prozeugma • Pride opresseth humility; hatred love; cruelty compassion. • Diazeugma • Fluffy rolled on her back, raised her paws, and meowed to be petted. • Hypozeugma • Hours, days, weeks, months, and years do pass away.
