  3. Agenda • Present/discuss preparation for entering schools as intern and new teacher. • Watch/discuss “The Wire”. • Discuss crazy things that could happen in an elementary school. • Explore two websites. • Work together/discuss what we remember from school when we were students.

  4. Internship Placement Information / Verification Form • Name and address of school • Phone number of school • Contact person (s) • Other relevant information * Due next week – more information in the syllabus

Internship Planning and Placement • At which school are you interning? • Who is your contact person? • What is your internship schedule going to be like? • Plan this in advance. • What is your personal schedule going to be like? • Professionalism and reliability Ed – Don’t make a M.L. joke – it’s unprofessional. What We Want to Learn From Internship • Become better communicators • Understand different cultures • Work better with students • Learn classroom management techniques • Learn teaching strategies • See how lessons are planned • Learn about assessments • Become exposed to teacher responsibilities

  8. Interview Must-haves • Name, title and phone number of the interviewer. Also, where to find this person. • Directions to the interview. • Company research notes. • Several copies of your resume. • Social security number. • Names, addresses, phone numbers of: • Past jobs • Past schools • Reference contact numbers • A black or blue pen and something to write on!

  9. Preparation for Entering Schools • Be dressed appropriately • Smile • Expect the unexpected • Different people, different personalities • Bring only what is necessary • Two eyes, two ears • Understand limitations – legal and general

Intangibles Needed to Become a Teacher • Ability to communicate well • Must enjoy working with students • Ability to balance many different responsibilities • Ability to react to change easily • Expect the unexpected • Ability to keep everything in perspective • Understand emotions • Be in charge

Basic Needs to Become a Teacher (NYC) • Bachelor’s degree from a teacher preparation program • Background check (fingerprinting) • Completion of workshops • Violence Prevention • Child Abuse • Autism • Passing grades on teacher preparation tests • LAST, ATS-W and CST • This all leads to CERTIFICATION • A word on alternate certification . . . .

  12. Red Flags • ANY physical contact with students • Communication of contact information (phone number, address, email, screen name, etc.) • Meeting students outside of school • Students revealing personal information – abuse, neglect, violence, etc. • Being alone with any students

School Hours and Holidays • Most elementary schools are open from approximately 8:00 – 3:00, Monday through Friday (EXTENDED DAY – additional 37.5 min) • Check with your school, as these times can change according to the school and the day of the week. • Upcoming holidays (no students) • Check http://schools.nyc.gov/calendar
