Trade Background: Trade on the Silk Road was a significant factor in the development of the civilizations of China, India, Persia (Iran), Europe, the Horn of Africa and Arabia.
What was the Silk Road? • many different land routes (not one road) • some routes used the Indian Ocean • was 5,000 miles long from China to Europe • people did not have to travel the entire length • each time an item would trade hands the price would go up. • ideas, inventions and products were exchanged along the way.

Silk • Silk is an extreme soft fabric made from the cocoon of the silkworm. • It originated in China. • In the early days of production it was against the law to leave the country with silkworms. • You were put to death if you were caught. • Why was this offense punishable by death?
