Function of the Senate • Provides the official voice of the university community on matters within its purview • Develops, formulates, and reviews educational and professional policy, which becomes policy if approved by the President • Curriculum • Academic standards • Criteria and standards for selection, retention, and tenure of faculty members • Academic and administrative policies concerning students • Allocation of resources

Collegial or Shared Governance • Academic governance is a complex process • Collegiality consists of a shared decision-making process between faculty, staff, students, and administrators • It is based on mutual respect for similarities and differences and involves mutual trust • Continual consultation occurs prior to decisions being made 14

Nuts and Bolts of Meetings • Constitution and Bylaws govern many of our actions (e.g. elections, constitutional amendments etc.) • If not specifically covered in the Constitution and Bylaws we use the most recent edition of Robert’s Rules of Order • Meetings are generally run using Robert’s Rules
Types of Documents on the Academic Senate Agenda • Reports • Can be Received or Adopted • Resolutions • A formal expression of opinion or intention by a voting body (think of it like a really long motion) • University Policy Statements
Be Prepared • Read all documents in advance • Check documents for content and grammar • Contact your colleagues for more info or their opinion, if necessary • your constituency • Senate members • whoever is making the proposal • Warn people in advance of your concerns
Have a Voice • Get on the speaker’s list • Make a statement, ask a question, move to amend, … • Make sure everyone is “on the same page” • Be concise, use microphone • Minimize repetition • Be collegial, be civil
