The Research Paper: An Investigation
How is a Research Paper like an investigation? • Answers questions • Interview witnesses • Tries to find reliable information • Documents where information comes from • Sometimes allows others to reach the conclusion.
The Report • Just the facts, ma’am.
What is it again? • A research paper is an essay that puts together information from experts. The writer is not the expert. The writer finds other experts or witnesses and shares some of their information by writing it down.
Witnesses & experts (your sources) • Encyclopedias • Newspapers • Magazine articles • Books • Interviews • Documentaries • News Shows • The web
Remember . . . • Detectives keep track of who said what, where they said it, and when. You have to do this as well.
Are you a reliable witness? • Raise your hand if you ever pretended you knew more than you did. • For example, your mother hears you use the term “the time-space continuum” and is excited that you understand Einstein. You don’t bother to tell her that you don’t know what that means.
Not all websites are to be trusted. • http://www.squidoo.com/beatcancer
Good sites have • An author • Nothing for sale • Often, an .edu or .org tag • A logical message • Studies instead of stories • Fairly boring environment. (For example, pics of wildlife aren’t pictures of things being devoured. )
Working in Groups • Recorder (writes what each person says) • Timer (Watches the clock and records minutes.) • Runner (Gets supplies or asks me for help.) • Facilitator (Makes sure each person speaks in discussion.)
Groups will turn in: • Sheet with all names on it. • Start time. • Stop time. • Notes of what each person says. • Notes explaining disagreements. • Six complete sentences for each of the six criteria listed earlier. • Final decision sentence.
Groups consist of 4 people • Kinsman, Kisha, Amber, Hannah • Josh, Shawn, Heather, • Vinnie, Joseph, Kadijah, Lawrence • Forrestt, Dillon, Gabrielle, Maddie • Hunter, Matthew, Daniel, Ciara

Quick Summary (Yes, this will be on test!) • A Research Paper combines other sources. • A “source” is an expert source of information, like a reliable witness in a murder investigation. Know common types of sources. • Your research paper is a report, so you shouldn’t have a strong opinion about it. • Web pages can be misleading. Evaluate them carefully in the ways we have discussed.
