Different Words For Love! • Phileo-More nearly represents tender affection! • This word is never used in a command to love God’s word! • This love is not given without expectation! • This love usually expects the same coming back in return! Love Defined
Different Words For Love! • Agapao- Largely translated as “love” • 2nd most common translation in KJV is "charity" • (Esp. 1 Cor. 13)! • This kind of love is unnatural to man! • It is a love that must be learned and is commanded! • It is a love given without expectation and it denotes and demands a total commitment! • Jn. 3:16 • There are no conditions, no strings attached! • It always seeks the good of it’s object! • It is to Love the Unlovable! 1 Though I speak with the tongues of men and of angels, but have not love, I have become sounding brass or a clanging cymbal. • 2 And though I have the gift of prophecy, and understand all mysteries and all knowledge, and though I have all faith, so that I could remove mountains, but have not love, I am nothing. • 3 And though I bestow all my goods to feed the poor, and though I give my body to be burned, but have not love, it profits me nothing. • 4 Love suffers long and is kind; love does not envy; love does not parade itself, is not puffed up; • 5 does not behave rudely, does not seek its own, is not provoked, thinks no evil; • 6 does not rejoice in iniquity, but rejoices in the truth; • 7 bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things. 1Corinthians 13:1-7
8 Love never fails. But whether there are prophecies, they will fail; whether there are tongues, they will cease; whether there is knowledge, it will vanish away. • 9 For we know in part and we prophesy in part. • 10 But when that which is perfect has come, then that which is in part will be done away. • 11 When I was a child, I spoke as a child, I understood as a child, I thought as a child; but when I became a man, I put away childish things. • 12 For now we see in a mirror, dimly, but then face to face. All our works must be done with love as the basis! • Jesus gave us the Example of love! • John 3:16 • 1 John 4:7-14 Actions alone are not Love!
Speak in tongues • Gift of prophesy • Understand: • All Mysteries • All knowledge • Have great faith • Give all to the poor • Give my body to be burned WITHOUT LOVE THESE ARE NOTHING! Works Must be Based on Love!
“Love suffers long” – vs. 4 • Long suffering! • God is patient! • Romans 15:5 • Apostles were patient! • 2 Corinthians 12:12; 1 Thessalonians 1:3 • We must be patient – 1 Timothy 6:11 • With our brethren – Tit. 2:2 • With our family! • With ourselves! • In faith – Heb. 6:12; James 5:7 Love is NOT impatient!
“and is kind” – vs. 4 • “of a good or benevolent nature or disposition, as a person: a kind and loving person.” • A character trait of God • Col. 3:12-15; Titus 3:4 • Commanded of God • Eph. 4:32 • A work of faith! • 2 Peter 1:7 Love is NOT unkind!
“does not envy” – vs.4 • “a feeling of discontent or covetousness with regard to another's advantages, success, possessions, etc.” • Christ crucified for envy! • Matt. 27:12-18 • A trait of the ungodly! • Rom. 1:29; Phil. 1:15 • A work of the flesh! • Gal. 5:19-21 • 1 Tim. 6:4; Titus 3:3 Love does NOTenvy!
“vaunteth not itself” – vs. 4 • “to speak vaingloriously of; boast of: to vaunt one's achievements.” • Means also to not be rash! • acting or tending to act too hastily or without due consideration. • Is not braggadocios! • Matt. 6:1-8 Love does NOT parade itself !
“is not puffed up” – vs. 4 • “feeling self-important; arrogant; pompous.” • “To be full of pride.” • Paul condemned this among Christians • 1 Cor. 4:6, 18-19; 5:2 • Col. 2:18 • The proud fail! • Proverbs 16:18; Luke 14:11 • Indicates lack of humbleness! • James 4:10 Love is NOT puffed up!
“does not behave…unseemly” – vs. 5 • “discourteous or impolite, especially in a deliberate way: a rude reply” • Christ was never rude! • He was firm and spoke forthrightly! • Matt 23. • Rudeness is the opposite of kindness! • Kindness commanded by Paul – Eph. 4:32 • Kindness is a “work of the Spirit”! • Gal. 5:22 Love does NOT behave rudely!
“seeketh not her own” – vs. 5 • Christ did not seek His own interest! • Phil. 2:1-11 • Paul had the mind of Christ • Phil. 1:21-26 • He sought the spiritual welfare of the Philippians • So must we! • 1 Peter 5:5 Love does notseek its own!
“is not easily provoked” - vs. 5 • “to anger, enrage, exasperate, or vex” • Not to provoke one to evil! • Eph. 6:4; Col. 3:21 • Must provoke (stir up) to do good! • Heb. 10:24 Love is NOT provoked!
“thinketh no evil” - vs. 5 • No evil thoughts regarding others! • Prov. 23:7 • Could be expressed in our speech • Or presuppositions we have of others • James 4:11-12 • Evil thoughts reflect an evil heart! • Matt. 15:18-20 • An evil heart results in evil actions! • James 2:4 • God’s word judges our thoughts! • Heb. 4:12 Love does NOT think evil!
“rejoiceth not in iniquity” - vs. 6 • Rejoice - to be glad; take delight in; to rejoice in another’s happiness. • Iniquity - gross injustice or wickedness. • This is a trait of the worldly! • Romans 1:19-32 • They take pleasure in wickedness! • 2 Thess. 2:3-12 • Moral and religious unrighteousness! • Matt. 7:21-23 • We must rejoice in truth! • 2 John 1:4; 3 John 1:4 Love does NOT rejoice in iniquity!
“Beareth all things” – vs. 7 • Original stegoto cover, to conceal – to bear or sustain. • Will bear afflictions or persecutions that come • To conceal in the sense as used by Peter • 1 Peter 4:9 • Does not delight in revealing the sins and short comings of others! • Not a gossip nor a tattletale. Love does NOT reveal or yield!
“Believeth all things, hopeth all things” – vs. 7 • To give one “the benefit of the doubt” • Believes the best if no evidence to the contrary! • But, not gullible – can discern good and evil! • Looks and hopes for the best in people! • Does not yield to “evil surmisings” • 1 Tim. 6:4 Love doesNOT yield to suspicion!
“endureth all things” – vs. 7 • From hupomonomeaning to have brave patience! • Willing to face circumstances such as persecution, hindrances, temptations • Paul warned that persecutions will come! • 2 Tim. 3:10-12 • This love will be willing to endure what ever circumstance life may bring! Love does NOT yield to trials!
“Charity never faileth” – vs. 8 • All other things would fail or cease! • Love is unfailing and superior to anything else! • Love must be permanent! • Must continue to the end! • We will fail if we don’t have the “agape” love! • Faith and Hope must abide and continue! • LOVE is the Greatest and must be the Foundation and Basis of these! Love does NOT fail!
