  2. High School Transition Dates December 5th- January 6th– Teachers make recommendations for course levels in English 9, World History, Science, Math, and Foreign Languages. January 10th – Curriculum Fair at AHS January 16th – 31st - Parents can access and make HS course selections online through the Parent Portal. January 23rd - March 1st – Counselors will meet with all 8th graders through math classes or individually to complete high school registration and four year plans. Interested parents may contact the Counseling Office in order to set up appointment to meet with their child regarding registration. March 26th- 8th grade students visit AHS for tour and lunch. April 19th- Interested 8th grade students visit CATEC for tour. April/May – Summer school applications are available in the Counseling Office for students interested in Summer Health or PE. June – Parents and students receive Denial of Credit letters.

Things to consider when choosing course levels • Teacher Recommendation • Academic Ability- review grades and SOL scores • Effort- homework completion • Interests- strengths in certain subject areas • Time commitments after school- athletics, other extracurricular activities, part-time job • Being a well-rounded student

Programs with Applications • Math, Engineering, and Science Academy (MESA) • Health and Medical Sciences Academy (HMSA)- located at Monticello High School • Environmental Studies Academy (ESA)- located at Western Albemarle High School • Advancement Via Individual Determination (AVID) • Arts and Letters Pathway at AHS- letter of intent required • Murray High School • Applications for the three Academies, Murray and AVID are due by January 25th. AVID applications are on-line; Academy applications are on-line and on paper.

  6. Arts and Letters Pathway • The Arts and Letters Pathway is a concentrated 4 year path of study in one of the fine arts • The Arts and Letters pathway will permit students to choose among 15 areas of concentration; each pathway will include coursework, internships, and a capstone project. • Students wanting to complete a pathway must complete a Declaration of Intent form and must enter the Pathway in 9th grade (or 10th grade for the STEM Pathway).

  11. AHS Schedule • 4 Blocks of class each day. Classes are approximately 75 minutes. Students will have 8 classes overall. • Most core classes are year-long on a Red Day/Blue Day schedule. • Year I World languages are year long. Year II and III could be semester-based or year long. • Students can opt for a non-credit study hall. • Patriot Period every day. • One lunch each day. • All 9th graders will take Freshman Seminar class as an elective (AVID 9 replaces Freshman Seminar).

STANDARD DIPLOMA: 5 Verified Credits Needed English 4 credits Mathematics 3 credits Science 3 credits History 3 credits PE/Health 2 credits *Electives 4 credits FA/CTE/Lang. 2 credits Econ/Personal Fin. 1 credit Total = 22 credits *2 electives must be sequential. ADVANCED DIPLOMA: 5 Verified Credits Needed English 4 credits Mathematics 4 credits Science 4 credits History 4 credits World Lang. 3 credits or 2 + 2 PE/Health 2 credits Electives 3 credits Fine Art/CTE 1 credit Econ/Personal Fin. 1 credit Total = 26 credits *All students are required to take one virtual course

Credits and Verified Credits • A credit is awarded for a course taken and passed (a final grade of D- or better). • A credit becomes verified by passing the course’s SOL test with a score of 400 or better. This is known as a verified credit. • For an ADVANCED DIPLOMA, students must get 5 verified credits; including reading, writing, math, history and science • For a STANDARD DIPLOMA, students must get 5 verified credits, including reading, writing, math, history and science.

  16. Athletics • To be eligible for participation on any AHS athletic team, the VHSL (Virginia High School League) requires that students MUST be currently taking FIVE credit courses and must have earned FIVE credits the previous year. Repeating a course for a passing grade DOES NOT count towards this requirement. • First semester 9th grade students are eligible on the basis of their promotion from the 8th grade the previous semester. • All students must have a sports physical dated after May 1st, 2019 to participate.
