The Latin language is no longer a spoken language, but it is the foundational language of five very common languages – Spanish, Portuguese, French, Italian, and Romanian French Romanian Italian Portuguese Spanish After the fall of the Roman Empire, the Latin language died out over time and became 5 languages
How did one language “die out” and become 5 languages? Our class demonstration will show how: • Stand up and read the following paragraph together. Try to memorize it! You’ll try and repeat it to each other in a little bit. 1. “Latin was the official language of the Romans. All throughout the empire, people understood and spoke Latin.” 2. “However, when the Western Roman Empire was conquered, Western Europe was no longer ruled by one single government.” 3. “Different languages evolved in different regions. The languages are similar, but different.”
Class Demonstration • Now, separate yourselves into 5 different circles. In your group, try to recall what you read from the screen earlier. Write it on the white board. Place your white board at the front when your group finishes. Closest group to the original gets tickets! • (Notice, you are not all reading from the same script anymore. You must rely on memory and each other. Do not communicate with another group.) This activity has a point…..you will see in a moment. • Read each group’s statements.…. • Did you see similarities in what each group said? • But no group said exactly the same thing. Why? Because we were not communicating as one group anymore.
THE POINT • Latin was the unifying language in the Roman Empire. When the empire lost control, Europeans were not unified anymore (when the words on the screen were taken down). • Therefore, they communicated with each other in smaller regions (like your circles) and five different (but similar) languages developed. • Also, when the Roman empire fell, people lost all government organization and protection (the Roman Army was no longer stationed nearby to keep law and order.) • People’s focus shifted to basic survival. Interest in education declined since people had to devote their time to farming and protection. • Fewer and fewer people learned to read. As a result, the Latin language declined and 5 different (but similar) languages developed.
