  1. CFS Reanalysis EMC monitoring Cathy Thiaw Acknowledgements: Xiu-Juan Su, Bob Kistler, Russ Treadon

  2. Reasons of the monitoring • To diagnose problems • To look at the performance of the assimilation system

  3. EMC will monitor: • The radiance from the satellites • The conventional data

  4. Radiance Monitoring Reanalysis Run • Every 6h • radstat file • biascr file • satang file STATS Input

  5. STATS • Bias correction terms: > mean correction > nb of observations > total bias correction > fixed angle & scan angle correction > observed-simulated (with or without bias corr.) radiance statistics > penalty > lapse and lapse2 • Horizontal Plots

  6. STATS FEATURES Function of the time >>Plots will be made at defined time steps: -end of each month -end of each year >>Statistic will be looked up from an angle perspective (angle dependant plots) or as a function of the time (time series)

  7. Spatial Distribution of Stats: • 7 regions: • Global: 90S-90N, 0-360 E • NH: 20-80N, 0-360 E • SH: 20-80S, 0-360E • Tropics: 20S-20N, 0-360E • N. America : 25-55N, 125-65 W • Europe: 35-70N, 10W-25E • Asia: 5-45N, 65E-145E

  8. Example: 199701 • Instruments: HIRS2-NOAA14 and MSU-NOAA14 http://cfs.ncep.noaa.gov/cfsreanl/CFSRR/1997/199701/inputm/EMC/radiance/prd19.html Our goal: setup a monitoring system similar to Operational GDAS monitoring system: http://www.emc.ncep.noaa.gov/gmb/gdas/radiance/su/opr/index.html
