Working for the Federal Government • No real “bottom-line” • You might find yourself working 60+ hours a week • Pay less than private sector jobs but they have a variety of low cost benefits • Lots of regulation • Hard to get fired • “Family friendly”
Working for the private sector • Can be perceived as more glamorous than a government job • Similar jobs will often pay more in the private sector • Large corporations will offer an array of benefits • Smaller companies might not offer benefits at all and instead offer a “stipend”, or offer work on a contractual basis, meaning you would be self employed • There is no such thing as a 40 hour work week. • Much of your job performance will be based on the bottom line • More “hard core” and unforgiving ….yet can be rewarding • Bonuses!
General Tips • Enter a new job humble, but confident. Never arrogant. • Appearance AppearanceAppearance!! • The way you dress can hold you back professionally. • Buy an iron and use it! • Never go to work with wet hair • Save your own brand of personal style for off hours its not appropriate for the workplace
