Topic: Redox & Electrochemistry Aim: How do you determine the oxidized & reduced substances in a rxn? Do Now: Determine the oxidation #s of each of the following… Zn, HCl, CaSO4
Example 2Na + F2 2NaF • Assign oxidation #s • Na: 0 (free element) • F2: 0 (free element) • NaF: Na +1, F -1 (sum of compound = 0) • Na is becoming more positive. It’s being oxidized & is the reducing agent. • F is becoming more negative. It’s being reduced & is the oxidizing agent.
Example • Ag(s) + H2S → Ag2S(g) + H2(g)
Example • Ca + H2O CaO+ H2
Examples Given the reaction: 2Na + 2H2O 2Na+ + 2OH- + H2 Which substance is oxidized? 1) H2 2) H+ 3) Na 4) Na+ Given the reaction: 2H2 + O2 2H2O Which substance is the oxidizing agent?1) H2 2) O2 3) H+ 4) O2- Consider the following reaction: 2Fe3+ + Sn2+ 2Fe2+ + Sn4+ Which species is the reducing agent? 1) Fe3+ 2) Sn2+ 3) Fe2+ 4) Sn4+ Consider the following reaction: Zn + 2HCl ZnCl2 + H2 Which substance is oxidized? 1) Zn 2) HCl 3) Cl- 4) H+
