  2. Prejudice • Unsupported generalization about a category of people • Refers to attitudes • Negative form of prejudice is Stereotypes • Exaggerated generalization • Individuals see reality based on what they believe to be true, not necessarily on what is true. • Thoughts?

  4. What is Ageism? • Is the belief that one age category is by nature superior to another age category • Different societies place different values on age • Ageism can apply to any age group, but mainly focused on the elderly group • Does America reinforces ageism?

  5. The Aging World • We are getting older! • Est. 606 million people aged 60 and older worldwide • Est by 2050 the number will be 2 billion • Europe is the “oldest” region in the world. Average age 37.7

Graying of America • In 2000, 12 % of the population was 65 or older • Rise to 19 % by 2025 • This is known as the graying of America. • 2 main reasons: • Advances of healthcare and better living conditions • Variations in birthrates have changed the age structure of the U.S. • Birthrate rose dramatically in 1946 – why?

  7. Baby boomers! • Men were coming home from war and wanted a family • After the early 60s, the birthrate dropped and has remained low ever since • Baby boomer generation the largest of the American population

  8. The politics of Aging • Elderly Americans have more influence in the political arena • Groups work to bring awareness to older people • AARP • More than 34 million members • Provides services

  9. Issues • Social Security • Is it up for caring for the older generation? Baby boomers • Funded by payroll ( out of your paycheck) • You pay into the system and then when you retire the system pays you • Medicare • Government sponsored health-insurance for elderly Americans and Americans with disabilities • Medicaid • State and federally funded health insurance program for low-income individuals • All have stirred up much debate. WHY?

  10. Age inequality • 22 percent of elderly African Americans live in poverty • Hispanics it is about 19 percent • White is more than 8 percent • Poverty level for elderly individuals is $8,250 a year • Couples $10,400 • Most people who receive security benefits are above it by around $200

  11. Elderly with Disabilities • Disabilities affect many older Americans • Stereotype – incapable of working • ADA – Americans with Disabilities Act. Addresses 4 main areas • Employment • Public services • Public accommodations • Telecommunication

Group workwrite your answers down • Describe a time when you feel like you have been discriminated against because of your age • How did it make you feel? • What was your reaction? • Why might someone feel that way about your age group? • How might you break the stereotype of your age group? • Be ready to discuss
