Son of a chief, Nelson Mandela studied law and became one of South Africa's first black lawyers. Early in the 1950s he was elected leader of the youth wing of the ANC (African National Congress) .
WHAT IT FELT LIKE IN PRISON • From 1964 to 1982 he was in jail for standing up for his beliefs. • That meant he was in prison for 27 years of his life. • He felt like it was really unfair that the black African's could not do certain things. • President Frederik Willem de Klerk freed Nelson from prison.
Life for the poor • The life for the poor was being a slave for your whole life. • Sometimes the slaves could see the rich having so much money to spend. • If you had a different skin you would get as much a year as the white got as much a week • The rich could get their own football pitches

Facts • The president offered Mandela his freedom if he would agree to stop protesting but Mandela declined the offer. • He used sports to bring the racially divided country together. • There's now a global holiday in his honour. • He won more awards than anyone in history.
