  2. Identity theft is the fastest growing crime in America… Last Year more then 9.9 Million Americans were Identity Theft Victims and Cost them Roughly 5.5 Billion Dollars

  3. A fast growing crime • When someone wrongfully obtains another person’s personal data in some way that involves fraud or deception What is Identity Theft?

  4. Name • Social Security Number • Credit Card or Bank Account Number • Address • Date of Birth • Online Passwords • Anything that you can use to identify yourself What Can Be Stolen?

  5. Shoulder Surfing • Watches and listens as you give information over the phone, to clerks at registers, watches as you put in your PIN numbers, or reads your credit card numbers as you pull them out. Dumpster Diving • Going through your garbage to obtain your information containing your name, address, and other personal information How Is My Identity Stolen?

  6. Preapproved Credit Card Applications • Criminals activate these and use them in your name Spam • Criminals send emails through spam requesting personal data in return of offering some prize that is non existent. How Is My Identity Stolen?

  7. “In one notorious case of identity theft, the criminal, a convicted felon, not only incurred more than $100,000 of credit card debt, obtained a federal home loan, and bought homes, motorcycles, and handguns in the victim's name, but called his victim to taunt him -- saying that he could continue to pose as the victim for as long as he wanted because identity theft was not a federal crime at that time -- before filing for bankruptcy, also in the victim's name. While the victim and his wife spent more than four years and more than $15,000 of their own money to restore their credit and reputation, the criminal served a brief sentence for making a false statement to procure a firearm, but made no restitution to his victim for any of the harm he had caused.
