  4. What will happen? • 1960s - Hutu’s overthrew the Tutsi govt. • 1990 – Civil War • 1994 – Hutu President was shot down • ????

  5. 1994 genocide against the Tutsi’s begins • Who will help?? • UN withdrew • “Failure to respond” • Estimated 800,000 killed • Many fled

  7. Bosnian Genocide • After WWI – Yugoslavia formed • 8 Major ethnic groups • What happens with different ethnic groups? • What is the major ethnic group?

  8. Breakup of Yugoslavia • Serbian leader Slobodan Milosevic wanted leadership • Many Serbs fled • Slovenia and Croatia declare independence • Serbian-led Yugoslavia doesn’t like that and invades • HOORAY! Slovenia and Croatia are able to free themselves and remain independent

  9. In 1992, Bosnia-Herzegovina declared independence • BUT Bosnia becomes divided • Bosnia’s Muslims and Croats want independence • Bosnian Serbs are opposed • Result: The Bosnian Serbs launch a war in March 1992

  10. Ethnic Cleansing • Serbian Goal: Get rid of Muslims and Croats in Bosnia • 7,500 men/boys were killed • 3,000 in act of fleeing were killed • Thousands more on farms, warehouses • Included murder, rape, torture, robbery • Ethnic cleansing = genocide
