Notes p. 213 The Trayvon Martin Case • Trayvon Martin was a 17-year-old African-American high school student who was shot and killed in Sanford, FL on February 26 • His killer was a neighborhood watch captain named George Zimmerman, who is of mixed ethnic decent • Zimmerman claimed he was acting in self defense and has not yet been arrested • Florida has a “Stand Your Ground” self defense law • Says a person may use deadly force if there is a reasonable threat without having to retreat first • The Justice Department was called in to investigate
Use either p. 212 or 213 Press Conference Activity • Imagine you are at President Obama’s press conference • He is about to be asked a question about the Trayvon Martin case • You need to write down what Obama says so you can include a couple of quotes in an article you are writing • Try to take notes on what Obama says during this video clip
Press Conference Transcript • Now that you have the transcript, write a newspaper editorial about the Trayvon Martin case • In your article you must… • Give a basic summary of the facts of the case • Give your opinion about the case • Use at least two pieces of evidence (including at least one quote from President Obama) • And tell why that evidence is important
