Simplified climatic map of Africa: Sub-Saharan Africa consists of the Sahel and the Horn of Africa in the north (yellow), the tropical savannas (light green) and the tropical rainforests (dark green) of Equatorial Africa, and the arid Kalahari Basin (yellow) and the "Mediterranean" south coast (olive) of Southern Africa.
Consequences of the development gap. • Work in a pair. • Each pair should take one group of consequences from the table on page 113. • On each piece of paper write down one of the consequences of the development gap. Now work as a large group. Put the piece of paper in a diamond rank order – the biggest issue should be at the top.
Links with Sub-Sahara Africa • Read through the text from page 114 and the photocopied sheets from the AS text book. • Highlight/make a note of the key points. • Go back to the diamond ranking you completed earlier. • Re-do the task, but this time with a focus on Sub-Saharan Africa.
