Center for Advanced Land Management Information Technologies (CALMIT) • Research and instructional activities in remote sensing, geographic information systems (GIS), automated cartography, and image processing. • CALMIT’s uniquely powerful data collection and analysis systems provide a special opportunity for the application of geospatial technologies to issues and problems relevant to counter-intelligence training and homeland security.
Capabilities of CALMIT • Faculty and staff are experienced in analyzing satellite digital-image data, terrain mapping, and developing and using geographic information systems, from submeter to continental scales. • Staff members have previous experience with military and homeland-security applications of geospatial technologies including the training of National Guard and Army Reserve units in geographic information systems and remote sensing/image processing software packages.

Bioterrorism Education • The Nebraska Center for Bioterrorism Education supports education and training for the State of Nebraska in the response to biological, chemical, and radiation terrorism, biodefense, and disaster preparedness. The Center provides a web-based calendar of programs and on-line registration for distance learning.
Cyber Security • The Peter Kiewit Institute of the University of Nebraska at Omaha • active capability with Advanced Digital Media for Decision Support and Training Digital Media Simulators for Decision Support and Training • Simulators allow trainees to rehearse and experience alternatives about the future before the future arrives. Digital media simulators provide highly realistic visual experiences in movies and animations that closely resemble the “real world”. (Examples include battlefield operations, emergency response and other training scenarios)
Modern Languages • Active instruction in German, Japanese, French, Spanish, Czech, and Russian • Capability to expand instruction to Chinese & Arabic • Departmentally-sponsored study abroad programs in Europe and Latin America • A highly trained, teaching-oriented faculty whose central mission is to promote diversity, cultural proficiency, and sensitivity to other peoples • Previously provided summer institutes for strategic languages involving 6-8 week programs that offered specialized instruction
